Players won't exercise their "opt-out" if they have been playing badly. They wouldn't sign a deal that gives the team the option at that point. They will stick with the guaranteed money.
I was joking about Odorizzi. No way he is leaving Tampa for a while. He is their sort of pitcher. The Royals need someone that can go through a lineup twice and turn the game over to the bullpen. Gallardo and Kennedy should be able to do that 25+ games next season.
I think it actually helps the players. If they play well, they can re-do the deal. If not, they have guaranteed money. Why the teams do it, I don't really know.
Both of these guys made mistakes by not taking the QO. Signing someone as a 4th starter and losing the 24th pick sounds a bit expensive, but the Royals pitching is good enough. Maybe sign them and trade them for Odorizzi at the trade deadline?
If the player plays well enough to decide to opt out, the team will have done pretty well for those seasons. If the team wants to re-sign them at that point, it should cost a bit more.
Monte was a very influential member of the NY Giants in the 1950's. Willie Mays said that he was the best Left Fielder he ever saw. Pretty high praise, IMO.
I had forgotten that he finished his major league career with the Chicago Cubs.
Anyway, yesterday, January 11, 2016, this pioneer ball...
Another former Twins' CF may be dealt to the Nats for Drew Storen. Not sure of any details and the deal is not final yet. He is fast, but has a marginal throwing arm.
Storen will help the Jays bullpen a lot.
Maybe a bit of an overpay, but if he is healthy, he is worth this contract. I've always been a fan of Span. He came up to the Twins in 2008 as an unheralded prospect and showed that he "got it". He didn't miss a beat. Truly, I wish the Twins would have kept him.
Congratulations to the 2 guys that were elected. Good news for Bagwell, Hoffman, Raines and Schilling. They are pretty close to the magic number.
Who in the world were the 3 writers that didn't vote for Griffey? They really should have their membership in the BBWA revoked.
I don't see the Sox going far enough out on a limb to get either of these guys. Gordon will take less to re-sign with the Royals and Cespedes will likely want at least 4 years and someone will give it to him.
I make no secret of the fact that I am a minor-league baseball fan. I follow them pretty closely, especially the Twins' clubs. If there is enough interest in discussing the minors, lets do it.
I think Gordon goes back to KC, Cespedes back to Detroit and Upton stays in the NL -- maybe St Louis.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Gordon sign first, then Cespedes and finally, Upton.
Not surprised by this move. The Dodgers needed a right-handed starter and he should be able to fill the bill nicely. He is a bit of a wild-card, though. Its hard to tell how he'll do with the increased work load. They only pitch every 6 days in Japan.
