I saw Segura when he played in the Midwest League. He was a very nice player there and looked to be on his way to the bigs. He was blocked with the Angels and made a good splash with the Brewers. The league caught up with him a bit and he needs to make the adjustments to continue hitting...
The Yankees still have a problem in their rotation and less than stellar 3B. Not sure about 1B, either. Bird looked good spelling Tex, but I'm not completely sold on either of them.
Honestly, it looks more and more like baseball will allow a "platoon" system -- an offensive team and a defensive team -- eventually. Not sure if I would like that, but I'm all for the DH in the NL. It allows the team to keep some of its most valuable assets safer. Let pitchers concentrate on...
He will cost the Mets some runs in center. Not sure I would want him out there 70% of the time. Maybe 30%. Too bad they can't just DH him or Conforto. That would be the optimal solution to the problem. Or someone teach Lagares to hit.
All of this said, the Mets had to bring him back. To...
If the Mets are thinking that he will be their primary CF, they might be a bit disappointed. Offensively, he's fine. If he plays left, he's good. He has not impressed me as a center fielder, though. His defense there in the World Series was less than stellar. Frankly, I'd rather see Grandy...
Cespedes may have won a gold glove last year as a left fielder, but I am not impressed with his defense overall. He seems to have mental lapses occasionally, especially when he is in center. A team that wants him to be their primary center fielder may be very disappointed in his performance...
Left field is his best position. His bat plays well there. He is an adequate baserunner, but he needs to avoid mental "lapses". If he keeps his head in the game, an AAV of $25MM+ is reasonable. His lapses can cost teams wins, however. $20MM AAV for 3 years is likely the best he will do...
Rick, I cannot see any harm in Pete Rose instructing minor league infielders for a month in spring training. He would have to come clean and read Rule 21 each year, of course.
Opt out after 2 years in this contract. Not a real shocker, though.
I think Mr. Illitch will pay the going rate for another arm or 2 for the bullpen. He wants to win one before he dies, and I would like to see it as well.
The Hall of Fame is a baseball museum. Rose needs to have a plaque there, as do Bonds and Clemens. The inscriptions can explain what they did, but their accomplishments need to be recognized.
I just hope baseball figures this out to honor these guys while they are still alive. Maybe they can...
I like the deal. Not bad AAV. The term is good as well. Upton is worth the money, IMO. Surprised they didn't bring Cespedes back, though.
As to the Tigers' window being open or not, I'm not sure. They have a good offensive team and have just improved defensively. Their pitching is still...
Here is another thought -- in September, let the teams call up all of the players they can, but force them to declare 25 players as "active" every day. No more having 20 pitchers in a game.
MLB Network's Intentional Talk just made a couple of suggestions.
Millar's proposed rule change -- If a player hits a homer more than 475 feet, give the team 2 runs for it.
Rose's proposed rule change -- Give a team an option of "calling a shot" by allowing the team to get an additional run if...
He is definitely a "strange" player. Sometimes, his offense and defense are Hall of Fame worthy. Other times, he appears to be absent. If he can concentrate 5 days a week, he could one of the greats.
Opt out clause after 2017. He is a solid pitcher that should do well with the Royals. He will enjoy pitching in that ballpark and with the defense the Royals put on the field.
Good deal for both sides.
I don't see the Mets giving anyone a 6 or 7-year deal right now and that's what Davis is said to be asking for. I've not heard anyone else in on Davis. Cespedes may be available for less that the Orioles offer to Davis was.
