I'm not one who lives and dies by WAR, but in Jones' case, it is pretty apparent that he is not as hall of fame player. From 1998 to 2006, his WAR was 54.6, averaging just over 6 wins per year over that period. His peak was rather short. He had 5 all star appearances and five 6+ win seasons...
He has bulked up quite a bit. It doesn't appear to have hurt his foot-speed though. He is now in a spot in the batting order where the stolen base is not as important.
Some think that the "corporate" image of the Yankees is more professional. Others think that it is not a big deal if players have beards and mustaches. I wear a beard and it doesn't affect much for me.
I have heard a few reports on this guy and the jury is out as to his real value. Some say he will need to be a bullpen arm, others say he might be a useful starter. No one, so far, thinks he will be a "stud" pitcher.
Davis is a decent player, but his power numbers will likely suffer from having to play in O.Co. Some of the balls that go out of Miller Park will be loud outs in Oakland.
Both Derby and Nottingham are a couple of years away, but they could both be contributors in Milwaukee.
The Orioles have been in negotiations with Gallardo's agent and hope that a deal can be reached today. They are still interested in adding a bat -- Dexter Fowler, Jay Bruce and Pedro Alvarez have been discussed and are possibilities.
Each team has that prospect that appears to be a quad-A player -- one that has nothing left to prove in the minors, but has not shown that they can be a consistent major leaguer. The Twins have 3 -- Danny Santana, Kennys Vargas and Oswaldo Arcia. Which other players fit this discription?
Another solid arm for their bullpen. They have strengthened their rotation this winter and have also helped their pen. With their offense and defense, they should have a very good season.
Its going to be tough to determine which direction for the Yankees to go at 1B after Tex' contract expires this season. They were hoping to see what Bird could do in an extended time, but that will have to wait now.
