Let's play a game. Let's pretend Carmelo signs with the Rockets without a sign and trade and he and James Harden are now the wing combo.
You now have two guys who are very, very high volume shooters who never saw a shot they didn't like and don't know how to even spell "defense".
What are you now? You're nothing. You're the 2001 Glenn Robinson/Ray Allen Bucks except you don't even have Sam Cassell or Tim Thomas. A guy like Allen Iverson is going to walk onto the court in game 7 of the ECF and smoke your ass because you've forsaken defense.
There has never been a team to win the title with two wings who are high volume scorers while being inept defensively.
And actually, there haven't been many teams to win titles with the two wings being the two best players on the team, period. Jordan and Pippen did it. Jordan was probably the best on-ball defender in the league for most of his career while Pippen was an incredible defender and distributor.
Lebron and Wade also did it. Lebron might be the best on-ball defender in the NBA. Not to mention he's a total facilitator.
