You missed my point entirely. He was going to be the coach regardless, so what's the difference between now and later? An extension later would lower the risk somewhat, while the results would be no different.
Which is why I said: a tad premature. As in: a tad too soon.
And it's not a knock on Monty, I like him as a coach. But the team is going through major changes and imo the org is taking a high risk by extending him before taking the court.

made a lot of moves in the off season. why take the risk of extending now when you can extend later in the year once you know more assuredly he can handle the new players/personalities
What people don't like is that the trade off to acquire "super team" members are usually tremendously lopsided. Not to mention the collusion of players to form the teams. The Lakers barely gave up anything for Howard or Nash. The Heat didn't give up anything for Bosh or LBJ. At least the Knicks...
