I can't believe there's an argument going on about a game that happened 3 years ago. Let it go. The Ravens were the best team in the NFL that season even if NE would have been healthy. The Pats have won a Super Bowl since. You both got yours. Let it go.

get over it bro
Given that we won the Super Bowl that season, I'm quite over it.

I didn't go back and read my post from three years ago, and then write another essay defending how wrong it was

Lions seem to get fucked over quite a bit these days.

I get that they missed a penalty, but that really is a dumb rule.

Maybe a little dumb, but I think it's a necessary rule.

They let them do it when they have possession.  You're losing two points regardless, so there's no way to really punish that.

It's a necessary rule in most of the occurrences that it would be flagged.  It's mainly there to keep offensive players from pushing the ball out of bounds on fumbles, botched snaps, etc... I have no problem with what Seattle did, but it still falls under the rule.  Maybe they can make an adjustment to it in the offseason to exclude touchbacks on fumbles going into the endzone, but you can't just pick and choose when you want to throw the flag.  A rule is a rule.

I get the rule for the sidelines but for the end zone I think it should go both ways. And not necessarily 2 points either way because if the punter can't recover the fumble, it could be 7.

Right, but how would you penalize it?  They're giving up two points by kicking it out of the endzone.  Do you give them the safety plus 15 yards?

I think my point is it is rightfully not penalized

Regardless the idea that the lions got screwed which I've seen floating a around the interwebs is ludicrous

I mean, it wasn't a blatant screw job, but they should have gotten the ball back in a goal to go situation with a chance to at least tie the game.

Given that they fumbled on the one, they didn't deserve that

There are a couple ways to look at this.

1) it doesn't make sense that when a player fumbles going towards the end zone and it goes out in the back of the end zone that the defense gets the ball without ever actually gaining control of the football. It would be like a player fumbling it, it going out of bounds on the sideline and the defense randomly being awarded posession.

2) if you don't buy the first argument I made, why does it matter if he batted the ball out or decided to actually try to field the ball? Either way it's a touchback.

Because it doesn't give both sides an equal opportunity to recover the fumble.

But based on what the rule actually is, the Lions got screwed, can't really argue that. If anyone on the team even realized it, the refs might have huddled and changed the call.

Same could be said for when a punter does it

Probably, but you're giving up points and possession in that scenario.  When a defensive player does it, it's an unfair advantage in favor of the defense.
