Would be a poor selection on Minnesotas part, if they took Okafor.
i disagree

Okafor has the far higher ceiling, he just has the far lower floor, and is more likely to fail in the league than Towns

Come on, Nola. Okafor and Towns are can't miss prospects in a league where most teams lack even a single player of that caliber. The NBA might be a guards and wings league, but when was the last time the Finals didn't include two teams with at least one very good 4 or 5?
And a guy like Mudiay is an even bigger can't miss prospect because you know he's going to impact the game. Id be surprised if we look back at this class in 15 years and he isn't the best player from it.

Now when it comes to Towns, while I would still take one of the guards no question, I'd be more understanding of picking him than Okafor. Okafor will be a good player, but he would be a waste of a top pick. He's going to get you numbers but he isn't going to elevate or carry a team. The value of that kind of guy is just not what it once was.

More background:

Below is a post I made in April, just for some background:

Just look at the league now, this isn't the league of 15 years ago. This is a perimeter oriented game, the days of the big man are fading. Look at the top 6 MVP candidates, 5 of them are perimeter players. Take it further, I would say 20 of the leagues 30 teams are still in the hunt for the playoffs, and only Atlanta, Memphis, and New Orleans are clearly led by big men. Then there are probably six other teams that are somewhere in the middle.

So with that all said, yeah Okafor and Towns are good prospects, but I look at where the league is headed and I want the wing over the big, unless it is clear that the big is head and shoulders above the other prospects. I don't think that's the case though.
I think Mudiay will be a star. He is who I would take at 2 if I was the Lakers and I would seriously consider him at 1 if I was Minnesota then move on from Rubio. You know my feeling about the guard over big from the quoted post above. Russell would be my third and would go with Winslow over him as well. Maybe even Cauley-Stein.

I agree with you about who he is, but like I said look at where the league is going, not where it's been. Even if, best case scenario, he is Al Jefferson (or even a slightly better version) that sort of guy isn't super valuable anymore. Hell even if he turns into 80-90% of Cousins, that's great. But I don't see Cousins or Jefferson carrying their teams to wins, nomatter how good they are. Guards and wings impact wins and losses more in today's game, this isn't the 80s.

I look at a few different guys. Look at Drummond, he's great, but is he REALLY helping Detroit win games? Now if you replace Drummond with Lillard, how many more games does Detroit take? Unless you have a once in a generation big (AD) or just have a really poor draft class, wings are more valuable today than bigs. They play more, touch the ball more, cause more havoc in general, and I've never seen a team take a good/great wing off the court late in games where it happens quite often with bigs because of free throws or matchup purposes.

I also really don't think Okafor is the best player in this draft, not even close. Think about it this way, I'm talking about another big who isn't Towns here. Are you taking Jefferson or a Chandler/Noah hybrid in today's league? I'm not saying Okafor won't succeed in the league, but the mold he is in just isn't super valuable anymore, like I said.

Lastly you should always take BPA in the draft unless two prospects are close and one is a need. Take the BPA and rearrange the chairs later.

The Knicks would be dumb enough to trade that pick for a quasi role player

Minnesota could do the right thing (the thing they should do regardless) and take a guard too.

I really want D'Angelo on the Lakers, because he's gonna get so overrated even if he's great, and I'll love it.
