Spending big money isnt the reason, spending it foolishly on players that arent worth it is why the Mets are in the situation that they are in. The Phillies spent money on Halladay and Lee, the Red Sox spent money on Adrian Gonzalez, the Dodgers spent money on Kemp. Just because those teams spend big money doesnt mean they wont be successful, its about a good balance. And I believe money should be spent on pitching.

Maybe not Yu Darvish specifically, but another arm in the rotation is necessary to compete.

The Reds have agreed to sign former first round pick Andrew Brackman to a Major League deal, according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com (Twitter link). The 26-year-old Cincinnati native will earn the MLB minimum plus incentives.

The Yankees selected Brackman 30th overall in 2007, but he recorded just seven outs for them in the Major Leagues. The 6'10" right-hander posted a 5.11 ERA with 8.0 K/9 and 5.0 BB/9 in three minor league seasons before with the Yankees. They declined their 2012 option on Brackman after the season, making him a free agent.

The Nationals are pushing hard for Gio Gonzalez, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. The A's and Nationals are discussing a possible four-for-one deal involving the left-hander. The Marlins, Red Sox and Rangers are also showing strong interest in Gonzalez, according to Rosenthal.

The Nationals, who have Stephen Strasburg, Jordan Zimmermann, John Lannan and Chien-Ming Wang in their projected 2012 rotation, are poised to contend before long. The addition of Gonzalez would give manager Davey Johnson someone who has reached the 200 inning plateau in each of the past two season without posting an ERA over 3.23 in that time. However, obtaining him from the A's won't be easy. Gonzalez has many suitors and Oakland's asking price remains high.

MLBTR projects a $4.2MM salary for Gonzalez in 2012, the first of his four seasons as an arbitration eligible player. While most teams --the Nationals included -- can stomach a $4.2MM salary for an established, young left-handed starter, the penny-pinching A's won't necessarily be able to afford Gonzalez through 2015 unless they resolve their stadium situation soon.

Man I wish the Mets were like the Rays or the Rangers where they just are stacked with prospects and know how to develop players. It must be a great feeling when you have prospects at every level that you can plug in to various positions when injuries occur. Or players with just overall high potential to look forward to.

What we've been doing is focusing on pitching, pitching, pitching, pitching, pitching, and more pitching. Harvey, Wheeler, Familia, Mejia are four guys who could all be very good. It won't be a fun season for us Mets fan for another few more years, but those guys potentially could all be ready to join the rotation or the bullpen if that is where they will fit best in a few years. We just have to be patient, since we have owners who can't spend money we have to bank on our pitching prospects being the reason for us to win.
