tigers averaged 5.5 runs per game in his starts

you could get some jackass pitcher to have a 4.5 ERA and win a minimum of 10 games and the tigers still make the playoffs

Mainly cause the team rallied around him. That dominating pitching really fired the team up.
Also making him more valuable.

Plus his ERA was 2.40, so he could of have 2-3 runs a game average and still won us a lot of games.

you're making stuff up
there is zero proof of that

Porcello got 9 runs a game
Scherzer got 8 runs a game
Penny got 7 runs a game

just because his ERA was so low doesnt mean there was a guarantee he'd win all those games with low run support
there would have been more tie games and he wouldnt have gotten all those wins

Did you watch any of Verlander's starts? lmao.
It was quite apparent the offense would rally around his dominating innings, because he gave us a lot of momentum.

I didn't know the 3 of them won MVP?
Of course we needed more runs for them, because they are worst pitchers. Lot of the time Verlander pitched the offense was shitty as fuck, until he got a few innings in and then we got a couple runs on the board, then the team just stayed in cruise control cause they knew Verlander had it on lock.

all im saying is, he had a great year
he wasnt the best player in the AL however and shouldnt have won MVP

the only reason he won is because he got 24 wins, which is asinine

put Verlander on the jays in place of Bautista, are they in the playoffs? no

put Bautista on the Tigers, do they get in? yup. even without Justin Verlander pitching

put Bautista on the Sox instead of Ellsbury and they might get in, who knows
put him in place of Curtis and the yanks still get in

it's a dumb argument to say the Jays dont go the playoffs with or without Bautista
Then the **** did anybody argue the Jays playoff chances with or without Bautista?

And no Tigers don't make the playoffs with Bautista but not Verlander. Their pitching staff would not have been able to limit opposing offenses enough.

he contributed to more than 1/4 of the Tigers' total wins. What would you say the average MLB pitcher's wins are? 12? Maybe 14? That gives him 10+ more wins. Actually curious what Fangraphs says the average replacement for V would have put up. Those wins are a big difference between Playoffs and Going home in September.

PS. I don't want to hear anyone use the "every day player" argument.
Verlander participated in 904 ABs (I’m not sure if that includes his 54 walks)
Ellsbury had 660
Bautista 513
Granderson 583

Most Valuable Player is not Best Player. It's based on a player's value to his respective club, and clearly Verlander has an immense value to the Tigers.

Yep, the amount of innings Verlander pitched made him a damn near everyday player.

Tigers had a 15 game lead over the Indians

they were 28 games above 500 and the indians were 2 games under

im sorry, but he wasnt worth that many games
a replacement pitcher wouldn't have gone winless and they still would have made the playoffs

Let's just assume the average MLB Pitcher wins 12 Games a year. Maybe a little high, but idk. Thats 12 less than Verlander.

Verlander faced the Indians, and won 3 Times. Add those 3, and that equals 15. Makes it a much tighter division race.

tighter, but who comes out on top? the tigers

that offense was too good to lose the division

Also, Fangraph's WAR shows Verlander has just over 7.0_, Bautista was just over 8+. To me, if a pitcher is worth 7 more wins than his replacement when pitching just over 30 games, and a hitter is worth just over 8 wins above a replacement despite playing over 100 games, that means Verlander is pretty freakin valuable.

2 players batted over .300, 2 Hitters had 20 or more HRs. 5 over .290. Thats not such a powerful lineup.

And they dont have a lot of speed either. Austin Jackson had 22 stolen bases, second highest on the team was 5. THey were an okay lineup, but in a league with teams that sported hitters like A-Rod, Granderson, Bautista, Gonzo, Ortiz, Teixeira, Cano, Hamilton, Cruz, they still found a way to compete, and their ace was a big factor.

28 games over .500
2nd place team was 2 games UNDER .500
15 game division lead

thats pretty huge

they didnt make or miss the playoffs because of Verlander

the tigers offense that you're trying to dismiss was 4th in Runs scored in the AL as well
