Then the **** did anybody argue the Jays playoff chances with or without Bautista?

And no Tigers don't make the playoffs with Bautista but not Verlander. Their pitching staff would not have been able to limit opposing offenses enough.

he contributed to more than 1/4 of the Tigers' total wins. What would you say the average MLB pitcher's wins are? 12? Maybe 14? That gives him 10+ more wins. Actually curious what Fangraphs says the average replacement for V would have put up. Those wins are a big difference between Playoffs and Going home in September.

PS. I don't want to hear anyone use the "every day player" argument.
Verlander participated in 904 ABs (I’m not sure if that includes his 54 walks)
Ellsbury had 660
Bautista 513
Granderson 583
If hitting was the only thing that position players did, that would be worth arguing, but considering they also log a ton of innings in the field, their impact is much higher than a pitcher's.

And yet when we talk about MVP for hitters we only talk about their Offensive production.

this is such bullshit

IMO Ellsbury should have won; he kept our collapsing team in contention until the last day. And the whole "we didnt make the playoffs thing" shouldnt have affected Ellsbury, while it definitely did, because he was the best hitter in baseball in September. But the fact is that we had a lead in the 9th, and Papelbon blew it. And the Yankees blew a 8 run lead and lost on the last day, eliminating Boston. Ellsbury had no affect on either.
I would have even been fine if Bautista won; he had great offensive numbers, played fairly well at 3B. He is the Toronto Blue Jays.

But Verlander? Hell no.

People use the argument of Ellsbury having talent around him, that he was on a good team. Miguel Cabrera was an MVP candidate as well (and was more valuable than Verlander), and he put up great numbers. Why didnt that affect Verlander's status?

Also, those wins are surely inflated. Most of their rotation had ERAs over 4. And Doug Fister won 80% of his starts, and had a sub 2 ERA.... why is he getting no respect regarding Detroits value?

I just feel a pitcher shouldnt win MVP. He only plays a 5th of the games everyone else does.

Lets say your team is down 2 games with 2 games to go in the regular season. Win both, and ur in. Win 1 and your out. I would feel comfortable that Ellsbury, or Bautista, or Miggy will be there to contribute in those games. Verlander wont even play in one of those games, maybe both. How can you say he's the most valuable to his team? If his team makes the playoffs in this scenario, it certaintly isnt because of him being valuable, its the batters around him

I have a solid fact for you, that makes your logic quite irrelevant. Justin Verlander is MVP.

He won the MVP award yes, but he was not the most valuable player.

The AL voters have really sucked the past few years. First is was Morneau, then Pedroia, then Mauer, and now Verlander.

Gimme Greinke over Mauer anyday.

Not even close. Mauer, Sizemore, Jeter, Hafner, Big Papi, Jermaine Dye, A-Rod, Manny all deserved it over him.
Act as if Morneau had a bad season or something?
His season was just as good as all them.

Michael Young got a freaking 1st place vote. SMFH

3. Cabrera (3)
4. Granderson (2)
5. Pedroia
6. Cano
7. Gonzalez
8. Verlander (1)
9. Weaver
10. Sabathia

instead of

1. Verlander (13)
2. Ellsbury (4)
3. Bautista (5)
4. Granderson (3)
5. Cabrera (2)
6. Cano
7. Gonzalez
8. Young (1)
9. Pedroia
10. Longoria

Ellsbury didn't deserve it over Bautista, either.. It's a shame really, if Bautista was on a playoff team, he would have been the unanimous MVP.
