"Word is" that the Yankees are currently willing to offer Cliff Lee about $115MM over five years. Cafardo says the Rangers are aiming to match whatever the bidding gets up to, while the Nationals are also still in the hunt. Earlier in the week, Nolan Ryan said he didn't expect Texas to be able to outbid the Yanks for Lee.

Lmao, the Nationals arent in the hunt. They were never in it to begin with. Cliff Lee is doing this nice and slowly because this is his big payday and he's the most sought after free agent. He has to do this the right way because this is his first opportunity to test the free agent market.

Depodesta connection. he was going to hire Collins to be the Dodgers manager, but he was then fired so the Dodgers hired Grady Little instead

Diamondbacks are interested in JJ Putz

The Diamondbacks had one of the worst bullpens in baseball history last season (league-worst 5.74 ERA), something new GM Kevin Towers will undoubtedly try to correct this offseason. Part of the solution could be free agent reliever J.J. Putz, whom the D'Backs have interest in according to Mark Gonzales of The Chicago Tribune.

Putz, 34 in February, was fantastic with the White Sox this year. He struck out 65 and walked just 13 unintentionally in 54 innings, pitching to a 2.83 ERA and holding opponents to a .204/.261/.313 batting line against. He did spend 16 days on the disabled list with knee tendinitis, a year after having bone spurs removed from his elbow. It's not long ago that Putz was one of the game's elite closers, a role he could easily fill in Arizona.

As Gonzales notes, Putz resides in nearby Peoria, something that will surely be attractive to the righty. The D'Backs also plan to pursue another former White Sox and Arizona resident, Paul Konerko. Putz earned $3MM in 2010 and is a Type-B free agent.

The Phillies will offer arbitration to Jayson Werth, but not to Chad Durbin, according to MLB.com's Todd Zolecki. There's no reason not to offer Werth arbitraiton. The Type A free agent will turn down the Phillies' offer in search of a multi-year deal, so Philadelphia stands to pick up two top picks for losing him.

The Phillies are interested in bringing Durbin, a Type B free agent, back, but they're reluctant to give him a significant raise. The right-hander earned $2.125MM in 2010 and would likely have earned more in 2011 through the arbitration process. If Durbin had turned down an offer of arbitration to sign elsewhere, the Phillies could have obtained a supplementary round pick in next year's draft.

The Diamondbacks are listening to offers for outfielder Justin Upton, but they won't be able to trade him wherever they wish. According to Ken Rosenthal, Upton's no-trade list includes the Athletics, Mariners, Tigers and Royals.

According to Yahoo's Jeff Passan, the Yankees will likely offer closer Mariano Rivera a one-year deal. Rivera is apparently seeking a two-year deal worth around $18 million per year.
Rivera, 41, told friends (via Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman) that he would like to get a two-year deal form the team. The sides have yet to talk terms of a new contract.

When GM Brian Cashman was asked last week if other teams were pursuing free agents Derek Jeter and Rivera, he said, “I hope not. But I’m sure we’ll wind up paying them as if there are.”

The Panamenian hurler was a 3-3 with a 1.80 ERA and 33 saves in 2010 with the Yankees. He made $15 million last season, in the final year of a three-year, $45 million contract.

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Dontrelle Willis has agreed to a minor league deal with the Cincinnati Reds.

Willis won the NL Rookie of the Year award in 2003, helping the Marlins win the World Series that season. He has struggled the last few years, going 13-24 with a 5.81 ERA since the start of the 2007 season.

Willis went 0-2 with Detroit in 2008 and 1-4 in 2009. Detroit traded him to Arizona, and the Diamondbacks designated him for assignment him after he went 1-1 with a 6.85 ERA and 27 walks in 22 1-3 innings.

The Giants signed him to a minor league deal in July, but he became a free agent after the season. Willis turns 29 on Jan. 12.
