Apples and oranges.

Because killing people and getting DUIs are worse than saying the "N word" it makes it alright?  I also find it quite comical that you're defending him by saying it doesn't make him a racist, yet you're calling the word the "N word" instead of actually saying the word itself. That says it all.

He used a racial slur in front of a recording device, and looked pissed off saying it. I could understand if you could he was saying it in a joking tone, but he wasn't.

I'm truly sorry Riley Cooper has to go through this shit storm that he bought upon himself, poor guy.

And yes, you can judge someones character based on a single action.

Well, when you fuck up, don't mind me standing off to the side acting like that decides what you are and who you are for the entirety of your life.

Apples and Oranges they might be but two of those things are incredibly dangerous and one is just a goddamn word. He has been more scrutinized than Josh Brent, than Donte Stallworth, than Leonard Little, than the plethora of athletes who have gotten DUIs. Hell, I bet more people are mad at Riley Cooper for saying the N word than they are at Aaron Hernandez for killing another man. Hell, he's been more scrutinized than the athletes who have used gay slurs, which is a much more relevant topic in today's world than the age-old White-on-Black racism that isn't nearly as prevalent in our society as it once was. Hell, half the time people think racism is there when it simply isn't, these days.

Our society is fucking pathetic in the worst ways.

Get off your high horse and realize that you've made real mistakes, have done things that are probably worse than getting drunk and saying "nigger" while Kenny Chesney's high on cocaine and singing his songs on a stage. Jesus Christ. People are assholes at concerts, and if this defines Cooper's entire essence as a human being, then our society is a bunch of self-important blowhards who need to look in the mirror and recognize the faults that are in plain fucking view.

I have fucked up many a time. I don't pretend to be some first class citizen with high morals. I have more than I deserve and it's not a lot.

Calling him more scrutinized is just lazy. No one believe what he has done is worse. It's a touchy subject and the only court that can get involved is the court of the general public, which is why it's being brought up more. He insulted an entire race in front of a camera, so obviously he's going to get a little more hate than some morons getting behind the wheel of a car when intoxicated.

I will agree with him getting more shit than those using gay slurs, but thats where we are as a society when it comes to the gay and lesbian community. They aren't treated as complete equals by law, which is wrong but right now it's just how it is. Not to mention the amount of bible thumpers in sports who think it's alright to descriminate against gays, who really don't even care about them receiving equality.

Not sure why you're attacking me, when I have nothing to do with Riley Cooper putting down an entire group of people. But whatever floats your boat, bruh

You're kidding, right? You can't sit there and tell me that racism is as bad as it once was. Maybe in a handful of places, but otherwise? No. Just no.

I guess I just find it a little absurd to consider this a defining moment for a man's entire life, referring to him as scum and whatnot, as if he can't be anything else. If we think that way, can't we assume that everyone who uses the term "cunt" is insulting all women?

its almost worse, actually

The amount of black-only discrimination may have gone down, but now you have discrimination against females, asains, arabs, homosexuals, hell even overweight people get discriminated at

The fact that you can't be an Arab man, born in America, and go to an Airport to fly to NYC, without extensive precautions on you is ridiculous.

Yes, America has become more friendly towards black men and women, but to go as far as saying that nigg** isn't harmful anymore is the most ignorant thing anyone has said on this site

Well, as the original talking point was only white-on-black racism, I don't think the other things you've listed--obvious, horrible things in our current society--are relevant to the original discussion. We know these things. You'd have to live in a box to not realize that they exist.

Where did I say it wasn't harmful? I haven't once suggested that the word itself isn't harmful. I've only said that we shouldn't be figuratively crucifying a single individual to the extent that he's being scrutinized. This situation has become absurd. Counseling? Come the fuck on. The mere fact that people are acting as if this defines his character is fucking stupid. It's a six letter word, he was more than likely drunk, and he's a human being, flawed like the rest of us. I'm saying y'all could cut him a little slack, is all. You guys are putting words in my mouth.  This is becoming a much bigger deal than it should be.

If I might add, as an overweight person myself, I sincerely hope that the scrutiny continues, because it is definitely part of the reason that some of us keep our weight in check. Yes, most of it is by our own resolve, but I don't see any reason that we should see absolutely massive people and just be OK with it. Individual freedom is one thing, but tolerating poor work ethic, disgusting habits, ridiculous displays of binge eating at the office? I can understand the scrutiny against overweight people who do these things. It certainly isn't all of them.

I find it hilarious that because I think he's getting a raw deal that that apparently makes me what he is, never mind that I advocate for equality. Actual equality, anyway, which if we ever get there it would abolish all the initiatives within the college and workforce system that require certain things due to race. Once we all think of one another as individuals based on character and not color, equality will exist, and none of these "rules" will be necessary.

Why don't you all offer me some perspective on why I can't defend a man who's being made into a scapegoat for real racism, racism that results in violence, that fuels hatred within a group of people and not just one person. All we know is that Riley Cooper said a word--he's never taken any real action that does any true harm to anybody.

So if an Arab yells "BOMB!" in a movie theater but there is no bomb the person who yelled bomb is a scapegoat for peoples insecurities? The fuck. He said he was going to FIGHT all the niggers here. Fight. Did he "take real action"? No. But neither did the random Arab in my example and he would have ended up in Guantanamo.

You're equating a bomb threat/scare to a man saying the word "nigger." Absurd.

You can't punish someone for something you don't know.
