Is this based on just this year's stats/performance, or just an overall sense (track record included)???

I would say as of right now.

Ohhhhhhh, dangit. I should have changed my #2 vote then. Has to be Daniel Murphy. Kid has been tearing the cover off the ball. 4.2 WAR is second highest among 2nd baseman. I like the Kipnis vote, he will be my #4

Kinsler and Murphy aren't even in the same universe defensively

Ok, but Kinsler isnt really close offensively to Murphy this season either. Ask teams which season they'd want and I think Murphy's offense would trump Kinsler's defense. If this were SS, C, or CF then I could see the defensive aspect holding a lot more weight. This is 2B though, and defense isn't as much a priority there as it is at other positions.

Kinsler is hitting close to .300, OBP is .349 compared to .392, 10 steals to 3 CS compared to 3-3 for Murphy, Murphy has 19 HRs Kinsler has 20. So Kinsler is still a really good player offensively and elite defensively vs elite offensively (and I'd put money on him not staying over .350 average (especially with a .354 BABIP at the moment) and poor defensively.

I'd like to see reasoning from people voting other guys as well, he's explained his Murphy pick and I explained my Kinsler pick but idk how a couple of these guys are getting votes this early (like Swish with the super-homer Panik vote)

Honestly, Kinsler's defence hadn't been anything special this season either.

I am always up for discussion, which is why i love these lists. We all have our own thoughts and opinions, thanks for sharing yours. One thing I found in researching is that Murphy has a .620 SLG%....That's insane for a guy with a career .443 SLG%. He has really elevated his game this year. Thus, I feel like he deserves to be further up the list. I would have voted him #2 if I had realized earlier that this poll was a 2016 ranking and not a track-record deal.

Whoever keeps voting Pedroia needs to either stop, or justify their vote. There's at least 6 guys I'd take ahead of Pedroia.

It's a "who would you pick if you were building a team for one game/one season starting right now" but yeah he's having a great season I just don't think he'll keep it up. Right now he's hitting more flyballs and less groundballs than he has before, and his hard hit % is way higher at 38.9%, I just don't think he'll keep it up

Pedroia has a had a terrific season. Best defensive 2nd baseman and is providing offence.

Him being in the top 5 is easily justifiable.

I'll start getting in on these (Schoop should be in the discussion based on this season alone)

Voted for Carpenter even though I'm not sure if he's even  a 2B (doesn't he play third too?)

Best defensive 2nd baseman in the league and still provides a lot of value at the plate.
