I don't think Harper is a finished product.

Harper in 2013 was .854 OPS, .368 OBP, .486 SLG, .274 BA, 20 HR, 3.8 WAR

The NL MVP was .911 OPS, .404 OBP, .508 SLG, .317 BA, 21 HR, 8.2 WAR

Those are pretty vast gaps and McCutchen was the worst NL MVP in quite a while.

That's some kind of expected progression.
he was hurt a lot last year

And dude, he was fucking 20
Most 20 year olds are in A or AA

Its really not crazy to think of him winning mvp
He will be in the conversation

And let me tell you, Mexi knows a thing or two about stupid MVP predictions so he's being cautious

The point, the only point, is that Harper doesn't have a track record of production that is anywhere close to what would be required to win MVP. He would need an astronomical improvement to win it this season. That point was made because someone said he could win MVP. He could win MVP like I could bang Kate Upton. I mean, it technically COULD happen.

And you don't get MVP bonus points for being 20.

And I don't want to hear about WAR. Go ask Mike Trout about WAR in MVP voting.

to he fair age probably plays a huge role in voting amongst reporters, they just won't admit it.

This niggas wildin

It's not out of the question that Bryce Harper makes a giant leap this season and becomes the player people have said he was going to be since he was what, 16 years old? It's not like we're talking about some average prospect who's in his mid-20s.

The dude was a prodigy.

He's 20, not everyone is a complete monster from the get go like Trout. He doesn't have the track record, but with his talent and potential, at some point he's making the jump, and there's a chance it's this year. We're projecting. Thats what you do with young players.

And I was merely pointing out that McCutchen did not have the worst numbers for an NL MVP in recent memory. He had one of the better seasons for an MVP all-around. Hitting, defense, base running, etc.

Well the leap will have to be damn near raising his BA by 50 points and doubling his RBI to amass the numbers we usually see from MVPs.

His numbers from last year projected out over a full year:

27 HR, 79 RBIs, 82 BB

That would have ranked him 4th in Walks, Tie for 4th in HRs with four others, 22nd in RBIs (NL only)

Only stat he's lacking "elite" wise is RBIs, but it's a meaningless stat.

The jump he has to make isn't as big as you're making it out to be. Average has to increase, but not that much.

I agree that RBI is a meaningless stat but the voters are mostly a bunch of idiotic dinosaurs who don't believe in sabermetrics. They've stolen 2 MVPs from Mike Trout.

RBIs have played a part, but a bigger part is the even more meaningless Triple Crown, and voters holding team success against Trout.

I was going to include that Harper's team should make the post-season, which will help.

That's because the voters are freaking dinosaurs who still consider RBIs as a crucial offensive stat.

EDIT: Lol you actually beat me to it.

Nats will win the division

Harper will hit 35-40 homers

Well how could anyone argue against that reasoning?

Youre a tiger fan. You should know better than anyone that winning matters in voting

If they win the division he will be in the running.
If he stays healthy, i see no reason to think he wont improve. Hes a great player and so young

I don't know what I was thinking.  The Nats are going to win 115 and Harper is going to hit 40 HR, and it doesn't matter if he does it while hitting .285 because the wins and HRs are going to carry him in the minds of the idiot voters.

Something ironic about calling people idiot voters and using batting average as one of your main statistical sticking points as to why he shouldn't win in that scenario.

MVP voting isn't determined by my standards, it's determined by the awful standards of the voters.  Thought I made that pretty clear.

Which is why I called them idiots in the first place.
