Atlanta Falcons coach Mike Smith announced the first offseason change to his coaching staff Monday, and it came as a bit of a surprise.

Defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder has accepted the same post at Auburn University after spending four years with the Falcons.

"I personally want to thank Brian for all the hard work he put in for our football team and Atlanta," Smith said, according to the team.

Smith wouldn't get into specifics about who could replace VanGorder.

"I'm not going to comment on (candidates for DC) position at this time," Smith said. "We'll get the best guy for our football team."

VanGorder has extensive coaching experience on both the pro and college levels, including four seasons as defensive coordinator at the University of Georgia.

I think its great news. Falcons really need to change it up if they plan on really being a factor in the playoffs, because what they've been doing these past 3-4 years isn't gonna cut it. So a new coaching staff sounds alright with me

Not sure how much was him and how much was the personnel.

You guys need more pass rushers and better defensive backs.

True
Plus, he hasn't really been all that awful these past 4 years (when he came, the defense was ranked 24th in the league. Now, we're 12th)
I just wish they'd get rid of Mularkey

They should move Mularkey to Defensive Coordinator.
He knows how to keep an offense from scoring.
Not even gonna lie, I thought that was pretty funny

The thing I found interesting is that a lot of people say that the Falcons offense is too conservative, yet Roddy led the league in drops and Julio, was tied for like 13th in the league. I also don't think Ryan is the most accurate QB out there.

So you would agree that you would have rather seen Mularkey leave rather than BVG? That's what I said on the Saints forum when I first heard the news lol

VanGorder did GREAT with the players he had.

If the Falcons hadn't mortgaged their future for a player they REALLY didn't need, they might have had a top D this past season and gone deeper into the playoffs.

Imagine if they hadn't moved. They could have taken Sheard or Brooks Reed-both excellent pass rushers-or Jimmy Smith-who's a promising young corner-and any of which represented a real need.

And then this year they would have had plenty of open options in the 1st for a 2nd WR (Floyd, Blackmon are out of the picture) but Jeffrey, Wright, Dwight Jones, Sanu, McNutt, and Toon are all good possibilities and excellent choices for a no. 2 WR, some maybe a no. 1.

That trade was remarkably stupid. But that's okay by me since I despise the Falcons.
