The Orlando Magic hope to pull a trigger on a deal for Dwight Howard by early August, according to SI.com
Maybe the Nets are still in the question after all.The Magic have told executives with other teams that they may not trade Dwight Howard, according to sources.
Orlando has told other executives that they will only trade Howard in a deal that is great for the franchise.
Another executive who has been in touch with the Magic front office believes they may wait until the February trade deadline to complete a trade of Howard.
Both the Lakers and Rockets are interested in trading for Howard, but both teams don't believe the Magic are prepared to trade him at this point.
The Nets could reemerge as a trade possibility if the Magic wait until January 15th to execute a trade for Howard. Brook Lopez becomes eligible to be traded on that date.
Neither the Nets or Lakers, the two destinations Howard has told confidantes he would sign with long-term with, have sufficient cap space to sign him outright next offseason.

Orlando Magic General Manager Rob Hennigan met with the franchise’s disenchanted superstar Dwight Howard today in Los Angeles, according to sources.
Hennigan traveled to Los Angeles to have a face-to-face discussion with Howard with the hopes of persuading him to back off of his trade request and allow the organization more time to build a championship contender. Hennigan, however, was unsuccessful in his sales pitch as Howard reiterated his desire to leave Orlando as soon as possible, according to sources.
Hennigan’s sale pitch had a heavy focus on the two men developing a relationship that would be valuable to the Magic moving forward. He expressed a sincere interest in getting to know the six-time All-Star and working with him to improve the team. Howard, however, was expecting an outline of how the team planned to improve and get back to a championship-contending level, something he didn’t receive during the hour-long meeting, according to sources.
Howard was staunch in his stance and again made it clear to Hennigan that he has no desire to return to Orlando. He told the 30-year-old general manager that he would “never sign another contract with the Magic,” according to sources.
During the meeting Howard informed Hennigan that he would be willing to re-sign with the Lakers at the end of the 2012-13 season if the two teams were able to complete a trade. The scenarios Howard was open to during the meeting were: An immediate trade to the Lakers, a January trade to the Brooklyn Nets or a clean break at the end of the 2012-13 season. But he was clear that he would not return to the Magic, choosing to leave as a free agent after the season, sources said.
Hennigan informed Howard that he didn’t have any deals in the works and wasn’t quite sure how to respond to what he was told, according to sources. He was non-committal on any of the discussed scenarios as the meeting ended.
Hennigan’s noncommittal approach has only frustrated Howard more as it’s believed that several acceptable offers have been presented to the Magic only to be turned down due to a lack of a true intent to trade the All-Star center, sources said.
There is now a belief that Hennigan and the Magic have half-heartedly entered into trade talks which has resulted in frustration among the many teams rumored to have included in the ongoing negotiations.
Trading Howard, however, is a process the Magic won’t rush as they understand his value on and off the court and aren’t willing, at this point, to lose him without acceptable compensation.
Because we haven't had a good Dwight Howard rumor in awhile...The Orlando Magic and Los Angeles Lakers are engaged with the Denver Nuggets and Philadelphia 76ers in a four-way blockbuster that could ultimately deliver superstar center Dwight Howard to the Lakers, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.
A deal is not considered imminent, but the talks have grown serious over the course of this week, sources said.
There are multiple moving parts in the fluid talks, but the framework of a possible deal includes Howard and Denver forward Al Harrington going to the Lakers, Philadelphia guard Andre Iguodala going to the Nuggets, Los Angeles center Andrew Bynum moving to the 76ers, and Los Angeles forward Pau Gasol and Denver guard Arron Affalo going to the Magic, sources told Yahoo! Sports.
The Magic would have a better chance of moving Gasol in another deal to get further assets, sources said, and eliminate the risk of Bynum leaving them as a free agent in 2013. Nevertheless, there was still a sense that Gasol's and Bynum's destinations could be fluid in the talks. Either way, one would go to Orlando and the other to Philadelphia, sources said.
The proposed deal includes the Magic also gaining draft picks and salary-cap relief, sources said.
A four-team trade that would send Dwight Howard to the Los Angeles Lakers is "very close" to happening and could be agreed upon Friday, league sources told ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard.
In the proposed four-team deal, sources told Broussard that Howard and Denver Nuggets forward Al Harrington would go to Los Angeles, Lakers forward Pau Gasol and Nuggets guard Arron Afflalo would go to the Orlando Magic, Philadelphia 76ers guard Andre Iguodala would go to Denver, and Lakers center Andrew Bynum would go to Philadelphia.
A league source told ESPNLosAngeles.com's Ramona Shelburne that the pieces in the potential trade are still very fluid and that Gasol has been in and out of the talks. The source, though, said the deal still is very close to happening and could go down Friday morning.
Sources told Broussard that Philadelphia has not spoken to Bynum or his representatives and has no assurances he will sign a long-term extension with the club.
"The Sixers are willing to take a shot (without Bynum's commitment)," one source said.
