Yea, Cavs fans literally think there is no way JR Smith could hurt the team, it's funny. Also about how Shumpert is some lockdown defender. 
 
Smith could absolutely hurt this team if he doesn't understand his role, and while Shumpert is good defensively, he's certainly not elite or lockdown yet, but he does have the potential for it if he actually stays healthy, but that's a big if. The Cavs are basically banking on two guys who were apart of a 5 win team to be motivated by being on a good team, which should help a little, but still.
 
Either way, I still believe this will help the Cavs. Even if Shumpert isn't lockdown, he's still a rather significant upgrade to what we have on the wings defensively, and JR Smith is a better shooter than Waiters and probably a better defender too, and he's going to get the most open looks he's ever seen, so he should help a tad if he isn't going crazy.  
 
If we could get Koufos or Mozgov, I'd be really happy. We'd finally have two pretty good defensive players next to the "big 3", with JR, Tristan, Miller, and Marion off the bench, and then I'd start to believe this team could maybe win one playoff series.

Or Thunder fans who probably ripped Waiters a lot given that he was on a fellow "contender" pre-season, and now probably clamoring about his ability. 
 
Either way, each team got what they wanted out of this. The Knicks were able to shed Smith's salary for next year, the Cavs got a replacement for Waiters, a "3" & D starter, and a first. The Thunder got their replacement for Reggie Jackson for next year, and he should help this year as well.
