But here's the thing -- he probably will.Mexi said:You know ainge won't
One of the three points guards will have to go -- its impossible unless you want Jaylen Brown or Jayson Tatum walking on a rookie deal. So you have the three following:
• Marcus Smart -- clearly the worst of the 3, but also the cheapest. Can probably be had for $10M/yr, and provides excellent defense and hustle. Team's win percentage is noticeably higher when he plays than when he's out
• Kyrie Irving -- clearly the most talented of the 3, but also the most expensive. He'll get a max deal with ~$34M/yr salary when he opts out in 2019, and hasn't shown any signs of wanting to leave Boston. He was the lone offensive threat from November-March
• Terry Rozier -- the Charlie Kelly of the 3. If he were a RFA at this seasons end, he could probably get $22M/yr or more (Hill and Teague got $19M last year). And next season, he'll be competing for minutes with Kyrie, Jaylen, Jayson, Hayward, and maybe Smart. Likely cant even get to 30mpg. Trade value CANNOT be higher than it is right now

• Boston can let Smart walk, and pay Kyrie and Rozier $58M/yr with only one starting, and thats half the cap as it is.
• They can sign Smart to a good backup salary (which I think they should do) and let Kyrie go. You definitely aren't as good but you have other talents to overweigh the $10M in cap savings (even though you're likely still over the tax the following year when Jaylen's max is due, or the year later when Tatum's is)
• You trade away Rozier for future draft selections, maximizing trade return, and run the following team as #2, just upgrading Rozier to Kyrie
• Finally, you sign Smart and don't trade Rozier, and you go all in 2019 to win a title with the strongest bench I've seen in a long time (Rozier/Smart/Morris all on the bench unit)
I'd trade Rozier personally
