Someone is going to badly overpay for Kimbrel this offseason and it is not going to be pretty.

Jacob Turner is making a start for the Tigers in 2018. I feel like I'm in a weird alternative timeline.

And he is as terrible as he's always been. Back to reality.

Long live Anibal Sanchez and Omar Infante.

He can be erratic but his stuff is still phenomenal. The only overpay would be because he's a closer.

Kimbrel is ranked in the 60s among relievers in FIP this year. He's so overrated.

Not to mention he can't complete 4-out saves and has a walks/9 over 4.

Maybe this year, but he was money last year and several more years in his career. One year doesn't define his career.

Besides, I honestly believe there are other relievers having breakout seasons that normally wouldn't, which is why Kimbrel is lower on the list.

There's no denying his excellent talent. All you have to do is see Kimbrel's stuff to know that he is unique.

Looking at WAR, Kimbrel has more WAR than Chapman, Britton, and Betances on the Yankees. WAR isn't the better indicator, but it is still a factor. Not to mention, Kimbrel's 1.9 WAR is also better than Kenley Jansen's 1.4 WAR who (if we recall) is "the best relief pitcher in the game" as of last year.

You are basically banking on one season to say Kimbrel isn't that good, after just two rough games. His FIP may be higher than ever at this point in the season (3.28), but it is in no way as bad as you are indicating it to be. This is still solid.

All great relievers who hit free agency are generally overpaid. We aren't paying Kimbrel a ton right now but next year might be a different story. Still, he's going to be overpaid just like other relievers who may be less WAR players to begin with.

Kimbrel was rough in 2016 as well. 2.92 FIP (which is not elite for a closer) and walks per 9 over 5.

There's no doubt he's on the down turn.

Speaking of down turns

Just look at kenley

Hasn't struck out the side all season. He just isn't the same

He's still good, it's just not a guarantee he's saving the game. I guess he's a regular closer now lol

I highly doubt that. He was on the low in 16 but he was fine in 17. Nothing structurally wrong, just not as good a season. He's still got the stuff, that hasn't changed.

And he's still one of the best elite closers out there, as WAR suggests he's better than Jansen and Chapman.

Worth the money? Probably not. Elite talent? I still think so.

That's the thing.

Any closer outside of Mariano Rivera is a "regular closer."

Certain closers have insanely good years, 2 or 3 together, sometimes just one, but no one is as consistent as Rivera. And any closer is replaceable. We see this happen year to year where closers on teams fall out or get injured and a set up guy becomes mainstay.

As great as any closer is, he's not worth the money. Their job is replaceable.

WAR only paints so much of the story when guys like Jansen and Chapman are also struggling.

I really hope we do not bring back Kimbrel. He is going to command like 5 years, 18 per

Sucks we won't get to see Vlad til next season cause of bullshit service time. He's too good for minor leagues at this point.
