ESPN is broke and can no longer afford the $2 billion for Minday Night Football. Amazon currently has enough money to buy the NFL, if they wanted to.

Broadcasting pro football is going to be dramatically different in the near future.

I heard last week there would be another round of layoffs. ESPN is a sinking ship.

They got way too political and never hid the aisle they sat in. I might agree with the majority of their perspectives but they brought their own shovels and dug their own grave.

They also got way too into popular narratives in sports. Giving SAS and Skip Bayless such big platforms might have lit the first match. Skip has been better a little more reigned in on FS1. Stephen A has gotten worse since Skip left.

I really think their over-promotion of first take is what did the most damage to their credibility. That and their commitment to protecting the leagues they cover above anything else.

First take may be bad, but SC6 is the worst thing to happen to cable television since honey boo boo.

First take gets views and can be highly entertaining, it's not why they're losing viewers. Most of the ratings drops can be attributed to cord cutters than anything else, not to mention how the internet has diminished the need to show highlights

Fair, but rooting for their failure doesn't make a ton of sense. Just don't watch it if you don't like it. There's still a number of quality programs they have.

I just don't understand why people are so infatuated with ESPN crumbling to the ground, if they do what are your options for sports television? They're still the leader for a reason

Make espn great again
By doing what though?

Seriously, I know a lot of people wish they would go back to only showing highlights but to me that seems kinda irresponsible of them and also seems like it's not a viable business model with social media/youtube/reddit etc.

Your sports take mirror espn so you defending them is no surprise. Happy hour is the only quality espn tv hour and even around the horn is starting to get ruined.

They're the worldwide leader, but they now have rights to the major championship coverage in what.... like 2 of 7 major pro sports? Their quality of programming has been deteriorating for years too

Huh?

And they have a number of good radio programs. And other companies acquiring distributions rights has done what exactly? Cause no one has emerged as a potential threat to ESPN. Again, what are they supposed to do? The opinion shows are the only ones that aren't easily replaced by the internet
