It literally can't be bigger than Harden's unless he signs a 5 year extension

you can hate bosox all you want but the nerd seems to be fairly smart when it comes to the money figures in the cap.

and look paulie i don't blame you on the misinformation. the idiots reporting harden got a $228M extension are the ones to blame for all of this

These are the deals. The red values are pre-existing salaries that won't be changed. The blue ones are projected deals around the salary cap. In 2018 its projected to be $102M, and in 2019 to be $108M.

From right now until the 2023 offseason, Westbrook will make more money than Harden. That's the misinformation being spread. Westbrook's "supermax" extension kicks in a whole year sooner, which is why. but in terms of the money made solely off the extension, and not the money on their current deal, westbrook does not make more than harden.

but again, you can't make more than the salary max. westbrook can't make $50M in a season because he's westbrook. he can get as much as the salary cap allows, and thats my main point. he'll sign a deal of 35% of the cap ($102M) with raises of 8% ($2.856M) per year, and thats no different than Harden except his kicks in a year later on a $108M cap with $3.024M raises

How are they gonna make that happen salary wise?

Rockets are going to have no bench.

It's all dependent on Melo and his 15% trade kicker

So Melo can decide to waive his trade kicker, but only if he agrees in advance to exercise his ETO and opt into Free Agency next season -- he'll be paid $26,243,760 for the one season in Houston. The Rockets would have to send out no less than $20,915,008 in salaries.

If Melo does not choose to waive his trade kicker, he'll make $30,306,653 this season, and the Rockets will have to send out no less than $24,165,322 in salaries.

With Ryan Anderson making $19,578,454 this year, its actually not terribly hard to get a trade done. If he agrees to waive the trade kicker, Anderson and a non-guaranteed (ie Shawn Long) gets the deal done financially. If the kicker is not waived, they have to trade away basically all those non-guaranteed deals to match the ~$4.5M difference. The Rockets have four guys that make $1,312,611 and are all non-guaranteed contracts.

---------

So its essentially Anderson and nobodies for Melo. They'll still have Harden, Paul, Ariza, Gordon, Tucker, Capela, Nene, Onuaka, and Qi as players guaranteed to be on the roster.

I don't understand why the Knicks would do that.

What's the point of taking on Anderson's shit contract just to get rid of Melo?  You either buy him out and eat that cap hit, or just stand pat and let him walk in 2018.  Knicks are in a better spot long term with either of those two options unless the Rockets have a decent asset they can throw in.
