You're right on the first point but the reference to slavery is in the third verse which nobody recites anyway. Why protest something that nobody recites, hell, 99% of Americans probably don't even know there are two more verses.

And Kaps protest has nothing to do with who wrote it or the words.

And what Buzzy said earlier, this country is so obsessed with patriotism/nationalism, it's stupid as hell.

I agree that it's really not a big deal if no one even knows about that verse. What do you want, to rewrite out entire anthem? That verse represents an unfortunate part of our history but it's still part of our history, there's no rewriting all of that. Do you want the White House to be rebuilt without slaves? I hope that everyone protesting is not protesting the country itself, but rather the shortcomings of it. I don't think they're lashing out against America in the sense that they don't like America. I think they just want to bring more justice to it so that one day they can stand for the flag and everything it represents.
 
As far as patriotism goes, I believe there's nothing wrong with anyone being patriotic. No one should criticize anyone for it. Every country has its faults and its bad history. Nothing wrong with embracing the good parts while still trying to change the bad. The country you're from is part of who you are and you should embrace that as long as it's worth being proud of.
