What has Manziel done though, OTHER than be a first round pick? That doesn't mean he's entitled to the job.

For the record, I'd start Manziel and try to trade Hoyer. They did take Manziel for a reason, but I also truly feel Hoyer hasn't gotten a fair shot either.

I never said he did something to deserve the job, which is the point I'm making about Hoyer, who hasn't done anything to warrant the gigantic cushion he received in the competition with receiving almost all of the first team reps in practice and starting the first two pre-season games. If it's actually a competition, and the coaches "supposedly" haven't decided, why isn't the back up also getting a start, or a more significant percentage of first team reps in practice? This hasn't been a competition, and if Manziel actually does start the season opener, I'll be even more confused.

I'm well aware Manziel has done nothing, but neither has Hoyer, and they're being treated completely different by the coaching staff.

Seems like their trying not to put too much pressure on Manziel too early.

I don't think its that.  I think they are trying to manifest a situation where they want Johnny to rise to an occasion and take something.  Believe me, the front office of that franchise prays every night that Manziel is the week one starter.

How can you rise to the occasion when you're not getting first team reps though? They aren't starting him on Monday, he didn't start last week, and Hoyer has gotten probably 95% of the first team reps in camp. Might as well have just said on the first day of camp that Hoyer would be the starter assuming his knee is 100%.

He's apparently going to get some time with the starters on Monday, but this is the 2nd pre-season game, not the 3rd, so who knows how long the Redskins 1st team defense will be out there. Just don't get why they don't just start him and see him with the first team offense and against an actual first team NFL defense.

Seems like the production of a perfect situation to have him totally bust through at the end of the preseason and give the fans a William Wallace type hero in week 1, doesn't it?

The Redskins technically don't even have a first team defense.

If he plays well, I wouldn't be surprised to see him be named the starter the following day, but not because of logic, but because of Browns. Guy will have had no starts and limited work with the first team. Basically would tell me they planned for him to be the starter all along but basically sand bagged him to lower expectations, expectations that are instantly blown back up to the moon once named starter

Exactly, this is what is happening.  They are sand bagging for sure.

That's what I was saying lol, smh.

They didn't want all this pressure on him. They didn't want to him to be anointed QB1 with the expectations of a Pro Bowl and a playoff run on his shoulders. They wanted to keep the pressure off of him for any number of situations; if he wasn't actually ready to start, keep expectations low if he was ready etc.

This doesn't lower expectations or pressure at all.

If they came out guns blazing saying "yes Manziel is tearing up practice, he's our QB1 no doubt" then yeah, expectations would be a lot higher.

I'm not complaining about what they've said (well I am somewhat). Like I said, I'm just puzzled by the lack of first team reps for Manziel. It gives the look of it not actually being a competition, or a fair one. And if he actually is named the starter, the question is why wasn't he given time to work and gel with the first team he will be playing with? It doesn't make sense either way for me.

Not that any of this matters in the long run, I just like to complain.

I understand all that. Makes sense. I guess we'll just have to see how it all works out.

Also, Jake, did you like Allen Hurns when he was a Cane?

Hurns was a great possession guy. Not the greatest athlete, not a guy that will take the top off of a defense, but a sure handed, reliable target that Morris always looked for when they needed a first down.

Really hard working guy. I hope he finds a home in the league.

Let the record show I was a big proponent of Bortles being successful.

And by that I mean I merely got lucky when I said I thought he'd be very good.
