He will be remembered as a Viking. I can't believe we has so much faith in an average rookie kicker...The Vikings released kicker Ryan Longwell on Monday, nine days after drafting former Georgia Bulldogs kicker Blair Walsh.
“To all in Viking Nation. Can't thank you enough for your cheers over the past 6 years! You've been awesome to me and my family. God Bless,” Longwell tweeted, in effect announcing his release.
Longwell connected on 22 of 28 field goals in 2011 and his 78.6 percent success rate was his worst in his six seasons with the Vikings. Over his 15-year career – including nine with the Green Bay Packers, he connected on 83.2 percent of his field goal attempts.
“Ryan has meant a great deal to the Vikings organization both on and off field over the past six seasons,” Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said in a statement. “We wish him all the best in the future and thank him for his service to the Minnesota Vikings.”
Longwelll had three years remaining on the contract extension he signed after the NFL lockout ended last summer. He was due to make $1.75 million in base salary this year and his cap number was $2.6235 million. However, $2.625 million of his $3.5 million signing bonus will be accelerated onto the Vikings’ 2012 salary cap.
