1. How the fuck is Melo shooting .400 for the season?

2. Why isnt Steve Novak given more playing time?

3. JR Smiths percentages are awful and its weird how since he joined the team, the Knicks have regressed.

4. Amare last year was averaging 1 bpg more, 8 more points, shooting .040 % better, and 1.4 more apg. How has he declined so rapidly?

Amar'e's knees are worse than your grandfather's, that's how.

I only hope that Avery follows suit.

Only in the D'Antoni system, can Steve Novak and Jared Jeffries look better than Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemite.

Amar'e was getting a lot more Pick & Rolls last year. When Tyson Chandler is down there, and never takes a shot outside of the paint, there's nowhere for the pick & roll to go. Exact opposite the other way, since Amar'e has a jumpshot and can space it out for a Chandler Pick & Roll even though those are rare.

I said it the other day that it might be better to play him and Jeffries on the court with the second unit, and Chandler & Melo, to space it out better. Crunch time, forget the contract sizes, and just try it.

Do people really think the problem in NY was coaching? He's got a cast of me-first players.

Surprised he resigned. Figured he would have just waited till he got fired lol.
Wonder if he will get another job in the NBA as a head coach again. With the failure he did with a talented roster, you'd think most teams would be apprehensive to sign him.

Will also be interesting to see how Lin plays outside of D'Antoni's system.

The next person who mentions Phil Jackson's or Jerry Sloan's name with the Knicks vacancy should get kicked in the balls.

I don't know where to post this, so here will do.

A friend of mine posted a status about how D'Antoni had to go, and that Melo is unfairly being blamed for the struggles. So I tackled it with this.

It's long as fuck, but it's good. Read it pls.

Carmelo isn't the problem when he scores 30, or when he scores 7... He's the problem when he's on the court.

To get a non-ball handling wing in position to score takes an incredible amount of effort. The Lakers with Kobe and the Bulls with Jordan had great success with a wing scorer, but they were both ball-dominant. While Carmelo possesses the ability to bring the ball up, he does not have the combination of athleticism, vision, and quite frankly playmaking ability as Kobe/Jordan. You see it works with Durant much better than it does with Melo because while he can score in isolation, he is also a spot up lights out shooter, while Melo is not much of a catch and shoot guy.

For Melo to score, you need to dump the ball off to him, clear out, and watch him dribble/back down and look for ultimately a contested fadeaway of some sort - and although he may be the best or 2nd best "pure scorer" in the league, it is an incredibly inefficient way to run an offense and it completely takes away the other options in the offense. How often do you see Carmelo pass after an isolation? Many times he's on the court with several capable scorers, such as JR Smith, or Amare, or Fields, Novak, etc. But once you commit to an isolation play, you hardly see the possession end in anything but a contested jumper.

So while Carmelo is fully capable of scoring in this situations, we not only complete tip our hand as far as how to defend it, but also we are making the other 4 guys completely useless. Besides isolation plays taking the offense completely out of rhythm, it is widely known to be the lowest percentage play in basketball.

As far as Melo defensively, he has the size/athleticism to stick with any 3 in the league... But he doesn't. We saw him play a good game against LeBron late last year specifically, but we can all agree that on a night-to-night basis... the effort is just not there. I'm not sure if you can chalk that up to D'Antoni, but it's never been there and quite frankly it's just a trend that we see in many all stars except for the truly elite players like Kobe, Wade, LeBron (which is why Melo, a top 2 pure scorer, will never be elite).

When D'Antoni's offense is at it's best, he is getting his wing players quick looks at jumpers and such as we saw with Jason Richardson, Quentin Richardson, and the like. It worked fairly well with Gallinari, and we see this year that Gallo is even more capable than most were willing to admit as far as being a very good piece for D'Antoni's offense. Melo was forced down his throat, and he had to incorporate him the only way it is physically possible for him to be used. It was the same way he was used in Cuse, same way he was used in Denver, and the same way he will ever be used.

Now as far as A'mare is concerned, you're completely off base. While I like to poke fun at how soft/lazy/heartless he is on the glass and defensively, let's address two undiscussed reasons for his decline on offense; because let's be real, you'll never get A'mare to defend or rebound and that is not anything that D'Antoni, God, Jesus, or even Tebow could fix.

When Melo came last year, his stats declined. With Felton we were running a lot of pick and rolls with A'mare, and he was actually an MVP candidate and surefire all star and possibly top PF before Dirk went off in the playoffs. When Melo came as discussed, we had to use a lot of isolations and that means less touches and he dipped off a bit, but he was still largely used in the post and was still a good scorer.

This season, his stats declined even more and people will make jokes about A'mare's knees and the like... But are they really much worse than last year? Even I am guilty of calling him out for floating a lot and settling for jumpers. But if you look objectively, there is a clear answer for this. Tyson Chandler.

Tyson, the league leader in FG% by far, is very limited offensively... He scores from under the basket. The same way that A'mare thrived last year with pick and rolls... That is Tyson's roll now (not as often as last year A'mare, but still). The reason A'mare floats? Tyson is a 7'1 250 pound body sitting underneath the basket occupying space. With the exception of the twin towers in San Antonio, you never see two huge big men on the same team both succeeding in the paint... And that is actually why Duncan developed his notorious 'glass' shot, and the Admiral was quite good in the short/mid range game so they could switch spots in the post and mid... A'mare is capable of scoring in the post and mid range, but Tyson isn't quite as flexible and it is completely unreasonable to have two guys on the low block at the same time.

I will admit that though D'Antoni may not have been great, firing him (he was effectively fired, let's be real) does not solve anything. It was just done because 'something had to be done' and nobody wants Melo or A'mare. If you spent all of that money paying D'Antoni, at least give him the pieces he wants. Nobody can succeed with these characters on this team.

It was the problem.

You have coach who doesnt believe in defense, scared of his own players, and doesnt know how to deal with ego's.

He was the problem.
