Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford has won the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year award, according to Mlive.com. The award, voted on by the Pro Football Weekly/Pro Football Writers Association, will be officially announced on February 4.

Stafford, 23, threw for 5,038 yards and 41 touchdowns (97.2 QB Rating) this past season. He played in just 13 games total in his first two seasons, finishing each season on the injured reserve. This season, however, he started all 16 games.
Could of probably just as easily went to Alex Smith, but well deserving for Matty Franchise too. Congrats :)

My main gripe remains with this award. Should go to guys who turn their game around, not players who recover from injury.

Comeback from injury, meh lol.
I think missing all but 2.5 games warrants to qualify for it :p

this is only the pro football weekly comeback player of the year. Lets see if he wins the AP comeback player of the year

What the hell did he "Comeback" from? He was hurt, he never played this well before being hurt. It's not like he was performing like this for a few seasons, got hurt, and then came back and did it again. He was the breakout player of the year, not the comeback player.

Steve Smith deserved this award. Had 900 more receiving yards this year than last year.

A QB coming back from a shoulder injury and having a season like this is good enough for me to win Comeback.
He came back from an injury.

Yes! We understand he came back from an injury.

It shouldn't count for players that were injured and just came back to playing though. Should count for players who had a bad season 1 year, then breakout/league top the next.

Then re-define the rule, not my problem.

actually even as a stafford and lions fan i think the rule should be only for injury-free players. coming back from injury isnt the same as having a career year out of nowhere. but, congrats.

Having a career year out of nowhere (Alex Smith) doesn't constitute winning Comeback Player of the Year either. What did he come back from? He broke out.

Exactly. Should be for players that have been successful, had a shitty year, then came back.

I don't even really mind if they include injured players in this, but Stafford never really had a good year before this. "Breakout" player is more like it.

Willis McGahee comes to mind.

Steve Smith is another good one.

Carlos Rogers?

I would have no problem with Mcgahee or Steve Smith being the comeback player of the year.

Mcgahee went from playing in 15 games and only rushing for 380 yards in 2010 to racking up 1,199 yards in 15 games in in 2011. While Smith went for 554 yards 2 TDs in 14 games in 2010 and racked up 1,394 yards 7 TDs in 16 games this year. Those look like great comeback years to me.
