As the resident Magic fan, I actually think this is a good move. I don't want to see the Magic go down the same path only to get trapped in the same situation eight years down the line, but that's just me.
In that case wouldn't the solution be to not give out ridiculous, long contracts to undeserving players? I mean the Magic put themselves in this situation by wasting their money.

The Magic didn't give Hedo that contract...

yea they didnt give hedo the contract but they traded for him. theyll likely have to let that contract live out too. and they wouldnt need to worry about having another young player leave in 5-8 years if they can build a contending team this time. though they tried harder then the cavs did with lebron orlando should have paid hedo and kept that team together.

Traded players can't be amnestied huh? But regardless I still think Hedo is a quality player. Sure he is getting overpaid, but there are loads of people getting overpaid in this league.

you can only amnesty players that were on your roster prior to the new cba. hedo will never be amnestied. as for trading for him, i cant see it. sure players are overpaid but hes getting older and he was never over the top good. i wouldnt trade for him. id rather be stuck with my overpaid trash. he'll maybe be dealt as hes closer to expiring. unless he goes with dwight i cant see him bening shipped out.

The only way Hedo is traded is if it's in a Dwight deal. That's the general rule I think, if we're trading our star you have to take back a bad contract also.

Wait, so can the Magic only amnesty one player ever? I'm not sure how the rule works... they don't get another one next year?

After reading the rest of this thread, I half expect to one day see this headline. :D

Dwight Howard's request to be traded still stands, and the Orlando Magic's general manager doesn't feel the team has done much to change the superstar's mind.

"Nothing has changed," Howard said before the Magic faced the Sacramento Kings on Sunday.

Otis Smith confirmed Howard has not taken his trade request off the table and that Howard's agent still has permission to speak with three, and only three, teams: the Dallas Mavericks, the Los Angeles Lakers and the New Jersey Nets.

"I think his leaving or going has nothing to do with Orlando," Smith said of Howard. "I think he wants a bigger market. I can't do anything about that."

I merged all the Dwight Howard threads, so in the future all threads regarding Dwight Howard trade talks just put them in this thread.

Dwight Howard hasn't rescinded his trade request, but think there is no chance he is traded before the All-Star Game, which is scheduled for February 26th in Orlando.

“I don’t think they are going to do anything right now because we’re winning,” Howard said after a 104-97 victory over the Sacramento Kings. “Even if this is the last season, let’s go out hard, regardless.”

Howard also doesn't expect to be dealt before the March 15th deadline.

Sources close to Howard say he would need to be convinced that the team is a legitimate title contender in order to stay with the Magic.

Howard could postpone his free agency by one season and leave the Magic in the summer of 2013 if they haven't already traded him, according to sources close to him.

“Even if he does a Chris Paul and opts in and stays another year, they’ll still end up losing him,” one league source said. “The inevitable is coming.”

I don't know. For some reason I just don't get that vibe he's 100% gone within 2 years.

We all had that feeling with CP3 & Melo, that they weren't going to stay with their teams -- but for some reason I'm not sold on Dwight leaving. I don't know why -- every indication is he's gonna be gone regardless but I just got this gut feeling.

I think he's leaving.

He just released a statement saying he has to do what is right for him, regardless of what everyone will think.

Time to start the "Dwight Howard to the Mavericks" campaign. Thats the best situation for him and his desire to play for a good title contending team.

Lolwut?

Why would he want to play in an old age home? Not to mention that Mavs have nothing to trade for him as has been side 100000 times now
