Thursday was supposed to be a glorious day for New Orleans’ basketball community.

The club announced it had somehow, some way cleared the 10,000 season tickets sold benchmark.

This without an owner, without even a season to be watched at the time because of a lockout.

But what took the Hornets months to accomplish, that of making it back to legitimacy in uncertain times, NBA commissioner David Stern undid with one swift and ill-thought out decision that same night.

By quashing a trade involving the Hornets, Lakers and Rockets, Stern unleashed the fury of hundreds of sports writers on Twitter for a comedy-fueled evening and likely unleashed the fury of thousands of fans ready to forgive the NBA for its childish lockout.

He also, however, did one thing much, much worse – he neutered the Hornets franchise.

Not to mention one of the reasons he gave for vetoing the trade was because he doesn't want players to dictate where they are going, which is bullshit. By that logic he will veto the Dwight trade today too, which we all know will not happen.

1st off, just shut up. We understand your mad, but he will be traded eventually. That trade does not help you guys out at all. You get a lot of solid dudes, but you have no star power. You wont do anything in the playoffs, but you'll be "good enough" to make it. I'd rather suck and get a good player in the draft. Like I want the Celtics to start rebuild: we're #3 in the Atlantic now behind NJ and NYK (pending the DH trade). We wont win anything, but we wont be bad enough for good rebuilding.


And stop with this "Dwight trade should be vetoed". The Hornets went bankrupt, and therefore Stern took control. The Magic are NOT controlled by the league. NOTHING can be vetoed.

LOL at Wojnarowski. I've definitley lost any respect I had for him as a writer. He reports that Dan Gilbet basically stopped the trade from happening, and hours later when the damage is already done, he reports that his email was sent after the trade was killed. GREAT reporting.

I mean all the NBA has to say is "we own the team, we will do what we think is best."

I just don't see how Paul can win that one.

I'm still puzzled as to why he's filing a lawsuit. Again, they didn't veto a contract signing or extension. If anyone should be taking legal actions, it should be the Lakers.

David Stern realsed the following statement in regards to the decision to veto an agreed upon three-way trade involving the Hornets, Lakers and Rockets:

"Since the NBA purchased the New Orleans Hornets, final responsibility for significant management decisions lies with the Commissioner's Office in consultation with team chairman Jac Sperling. All decisions are made on the basis of what is in the best interests of the Hornets. In the case of the trade proposal that was made to the Hornets for Chris Paul, we decided, free from the influence of other NBA owners, that the team was better served with Chris in a Hornets uniform than by the outcome of the terms of that trade."
