Obviously, certain sports cities are going to get more media hype than others. I have no problem with that. What I have a problem with is when they distort the stats to make one guy look great, and don't bring up anybody else.

For example, James Reimer was believed to be a great goaltender last season, and had a 2.60 GAA, and a .921% save percentage in thirty-seven appearances.

Devan Dubnyk had a 2.71 GAA, and a .916% save percentage in two less appearances.

Yes, Reimer won a lot more, however he had a motivated team in front of him, while the Oilers were looking to improve their prospects, and dealt with several injuries to veterans in the line-up... and they sucked this year...

Anyways, discuss.

Sure Toronto may get a lot of hype around the NHL, but on the flip side of the coin, if someone doesn't perform. Look at Schenn in his sophomore season. People wanted management to trade him, however he backfired with a terrific season. Look at Kessel as well when he went fifteen games without a goal. The media strongly overreacted and the fans attacked him.

As for the Reimer vs Dubnyk comparison, I don't even think it is close. Reimer made so much noise because it was his first time ever playing the NHL, and really came out of nowhere. Reimer was a fourth round pick, while Dubnyk was a first round pick, so more is going to be expected of Dubnyk, however Reimer outplayed him.

Reimer also made a lot of high quality saves. He was nightly on the highlight reel, and literally stood on his head, and is the main reason why we were in the playoff hunt for once. For Reimer, stats don't tell the whole story.

I agree with you, it does go both ways, but I don't find it reasonable that media sources like Sportsnet and TSN show so much Leafs stats, video clips, reactions, and such, when other teams get two seconds of attention on the show. Yes, Reimer did well considering the experience he had, but he also had a motivated team in front of him, and he actually had some defense.

As for the quality of the saves, I really don't think it means anything. Martin Brodeur rarely made those great 'highlight reel' saves, but he's still one of the best goalies ever.

Well the clips they show is their choice. People in Toronto like Leafs clips, so it is a marketing thing.

By quality of the saves, I mean he literally made game changers in the clutch. He came through in the most unexpected times, and stood on his head.

Reimer stood on his head but, honestly, I'm curious/skeptical until he can do that over a whole season. Sure, the Leafs were fighting for the playoffs at the time but I'd like to see him put it all together over a full season.

This is exactly what I am hoping doesn't happen. It has happened too much in the past. Mason, Raycroft etc.

Raycroft....still brings up deep rooted emotional problems in Boston. At least with me lol
