The Yankees have signed third baseman Eric Chavez to a minor-league contract, according to a source.

Chavez, 33, has spent all 13 seasons of his big league career with Oakland. He's been plagued by injuries in recent years, limited to a total of 64 games played in 2008-2010.

New York also agreed to a minor league deal with utility infielder Ronnie Belliard.

Speaking generally, I wonder how many Yankee fans that like the recent moves the Yankees have made but were hating on the Red Sox a couple years ago when they did similar things.

On the signing, low-risk/decent reward on a minor league deal. Nothing bad there.

No harm in signing him. Low risk and can become a nice piece off the bench if he can get his shit together and stay healthy.

We're only signing him about 6 years too late.

I've never said age had anything to do with prime, that would be you.

but you seem to think that a 40 y/o can still be in their prime. hes onlly 33, so maybe he hasnt even reached his prime.

If he's still performing just as good as he ever has, he's still in his prime. Mariano is the best closer in baseball and he's 40 years old. If that's not still in your prime I don't know what you would call that. He's been better at older years than he was in this age limit you're putting on prime. There's a difference between physical prime and baseball prime.

Eric Chavez could probably still be a really good player but he's been decimated by injuries. He used to be elite defensively and he could handle the stick pretty well playing in a major pitcher's ballpark. He'll most likely never be the same player, so no, he's not in his prime.

its just playing a high level, not necessarily your prime. thats what ive been saying this whole time. just because hes still playing good does not mean youre still in your prime. i dont know why you think that.

Because prime is judged by performance, not age.

Damn the Yankees are hauling all the big time free agents this year. First Andruw Jones, then Bartolo Colon, then Freddy Garcia, and now Eric Chavez. They are definitely the favorites to win the 2004 World Series, thats for sure.

Moves might work, might not. Just salvaging the little thats left on the FA market.

He's not the one making a big deal about his team's signings thinking every sign has a chance to be a great one.......
Neither have I. I said that Maxwell was a low-risk/high-reward guy and you're generalizing for everything else I've said.

But, if you want to go there. I'll say that signing Andruw Jones and Bartolo Colon could be great signings. Both have had a large amount of success at the major league level, Colon even won a Cy Young and Jones has been a legit MVP candidate numerous times.

Lets be real here, could these moves pay off, maybe. But thats a huge maybe, these guys are all way too old and way past their prime. They dont have what it takes to play 162 game season and as these past few seasons have proved, youth is crucial in baseball to win. Now if they signed someone like Brandon Webb, now thats low risk/high reward. Whats the high reward in Bartolo Colon? A weight loss of 20 pounds?
