with the red sox, he's the 9th hitter. who cares what he does? just catch and throw

he's excellent behind the plate. maybe not throwing runners, but blocking balls, top notch. always appreciated him giving his all to stop that wild pitch

he's worth a gamble
he's actually a solid catcher when you compare him to other catchers.

plus he has an uppercut swing that would play well at Fenway

This isn't good news for Jason Varitek, no way in hell would they carry 3 catchers on the 25-man roster.

Tek was brought back in to mentor Salty. If Martin comes in, he'll be mentoring Martin. Salty would most likely go back down to AAA.

We almost didn't bring him back......

But we did, and whatever he has left in the tank will help Martin and/or Salty.

Assuming the Red Sox do sign Martin...Varitek is only in Boston for as long as it takes for Salty to get healthy & stay healthy. Red Sox fans don't seem to want to face the facts with Varitek and let him go. If all he there to do is mentor then save yourself the roster spot and pay him to coach.

They signed Tek to train Salty; so that he could hae 1-2 years teaching Lavarnway. But if Martin could do that; it'd be even better
