Bill Cowher says he’s ready to consider “opportunities”​

Nearly four years after leaving the Steelers and joining the CBS studio team, Bill Cowher has made it clear that he’s ready to return. Maybe.

But he isn’t making his interest known by, for example, pretending to be interested in a college job. Cowher is instead doing it the old-fashioned way.

He’s saying so.

“I’m open to listen to opportunities,” Cowher said in an online chat at USAToday.com, via Michael Hiestand of USA Today. “I’m very comfortable at CBS. I’ll keep all my options open. And I’ll only answer those questions at the end of the season. I’m not going to comment on any hypothetical situations until the entire season is over.”

The best fit for Cowher, in our view, remains the Giants. After a slow start, however, the Giants has propelled themselves into playoff contention. If they make it, the job likely won’t be open. If they don’t make it, coach Tom Coughlin could be out — especially since he’s 64 and entering the final year of his contract.

Panthers fans remain very interested in Cowher making the move from Raleigh to Charlotte. But owner Jerry Richardson likely is unwilling to give Cowher the kind of money and power he’d want.

Also working against Cowher in 2011 is the potential for a lockout that would wipe out much of the offseason practice schedule. Any team that brings in a new coach could end up with less time to make a proper transition.

Then again, if anyone can make it happen with limited time, it’s Cowher.

A lot of job openings this offseason, many are pretty prestigious spots, I think its time for Bill to get back on the sidelines. I wouldn't expect him to be leading the Vikings onto the field in 2011 but somebody will make it worth his while to get off the couch.

Probable Openings:
- Cincinnati
- Houston
- San Francisco

Possible Openings:
- New York Giants (if Giants don't make playoffs)
- Cleveland (Not sure Mangini is a Holmgren guy)
- Tennessee (I think Fisher ends up in Dallas)
- Carolina

Bill Cowher just bought a home outside of Jacksonville area in Ponte Vedra. Which is where the Jags let the free agents they bring in every year for visits stay. So that tells you that it isn't far. Just sayin.

He won't go to Dallas, Bill Cowher is wanting full control where hes allowed to make his own decisions. Jerry won't allow that.

Jerry is too controlling. Plus, if they keep going with Gilbert, knowing him, he will just keep him as the guy.

Carolina was the large rumbling at the start of the year, even before they went down on this huge slide.

Yes, Garrett. I think they are going to pretty damn content with him. I mean, he walked into Indy and NY and led this team to victories. That probably was just enough in the eyes right there for Jones.

Carolina would be a horrible situation. Maybe a team like San Diego? I mean, if Norv Turner is one and done in the playoffs -- or they don't even make it, I could easily see them giving him the boot finally.

Just to be honest, I can't picture Cowher anywhere but maybe New York. He just doesn't seem right anywhere else but Pittsburgh to be honest.

I think you'll see Bowlen bring in a small time coach, you don't need/want another distraction with a big named coach. Which is exactly what they tried to do when they said the Job was Troy Calhoun's, he just happened to turn them down though. I'd expect a teams Offensive coordinator or Defensive Coordinator to be the next Broncos HC.

As good as it sounds, I don't think there's any way Bill Cowher comes to the Bengals. Mike Brown does not give any control to the head coach, whatsoever. There's no way Bill would coach for a team with poor management. Also, Mike Brown won't pay much for a coach, so our more realistic possibilities are guys like Hue Jackson from the Raiders. He was our Wide receivers coach from 2004-2006. Another possibility is Mike Zimmer, the current defensive coordinator. I don't see any big name coach coming to Cincinnati such as Bill Cowher, Jon Gruden, Jeff Fisher etc.

We got a solid defense other than the D-line is just terrible. And some players who can make some noise on offense as well in Smith/DWill/Jstew. Believe it or not, McDaniels was a pretty big bid before he was hired. IIRC he had a couple of interviews and such, people liked him because they thought he was the mastermind behind bradys 17-1 season.

Yep, but no way in hell does Cowher go to Dallas.
He wants to make his own decisions, not let Jerry "I DRAFT TERRIBLE" Jones do it for him.
