The Associated Press reports that George Steinbrenner, owner of the New York Yankees, has died.

Update at 9:52 a.m. ET:The New York Daily News, quoting a "high-placed source with the team," reports that Steinbrenner died around 6:30 a.m. today in Tampa.

Steinbrenner, who turned 80 last week, has owned the Yankees since 1973.

RIP George, you meant a lot not only to your family, the Yankees, the MLB, but sports (and ultimately, the world) as a whole. You changed the landscape of the league, and the only thing that can trump what you did on the field is the contributions you made off of it. Many may call you an a$$hole, but you were OUR a$$hole - and to be honest, many people give you credit for being much more of one than you really were. I can't wait to hear what great things people have to say about what went on behind closed doors, as you were known for being quite the philanthropist, never wanting to take credit for it publicly.. But you changed many lives, now it's time for you to take some time off.

Yeah this is a sad day in sports. His sons won't be able to run how he did or with the enthusiasm that he did. R.I.P GEORGE.

Wow. It's sad when great people pass away. Definitely a great owner who meant a lot to the Yankees organization and fans.
