How was the ASVAB though when you first took it? Is it like the SAT or ACT Test?
Negative. As I am sure your Recruiter already told you, the Asvab tests your general knowledge in about 8 or 9 different categories, ranging from Mechanical to Administrative. The purpose is to take your scores and put you in the best military career field suitable toward your general skills. It's a test that I think everyone should have to take before getting out of high school.

Some areas can have really tough technical questions while monkeys could answer others. I remember one question from when I took mine. It literally showed me a photo of a hammer and gave me 4 multiple choice options of "name the pictured item." The section you really want to score well on is "GT". Your GT score can either qualify you or disqualify you from a lot of career options. Even down the road, if your looking to get into certain schools or change your job, your GT score can make or break those opportunities.

You can always take re-take this test later in your military career if need be. For now, don't sweat it. If you have a fully functional brain, you will do well enough. Funny story though, a girl that took the test with me that day, scored a 4. A freaking 4.

Welcome to NJ AE.
Thanks. Happy to be working in Jersey...not so thrilled about living in Philly.

haha, so basically if I want to be an MP, and I dont get a good enough score to be one, I have to keep re taking it until I get a good enough score? And what does GT stand for?

GT stands for General Technical...I think. General-something. Is there an MP Guard unit nearby you? Cause if so and if your planning on joining that unit...you shouldn't have a problem.

Once you finish the test, you will meet with an Army Liaison. He will take your test score and ask you for your main preference in finding you a spot. (i.e. location, bonus, etc) If you tell him that the 46th is where you want to be, and as long as they have a slot open, you will get in.

Just DO NOT be sucked in by any Army bonuses when you enlist. The Army tends to throw enlistment bonuses at you when you join but a lot of times, you get stuck working a job that you hate for a long time b/c you collected a few grand up front. Be smart about it and be patient. When I enlisted, they offered me $3K if I took a Heavy Wheel Mechanic job. I opted to choose a job a wanted to do even though it offered no bonus. I am very happy with the choice i made.

I was patient and the bonus money eventually came. I just re-upped for $15K.

I came into the Army as a 19K, (tanker), but when I left Active Duty and joined the reserve, they made me re-class to 42A, (Human resources spec). I worked at the 98th Division HQ for a couple years but left for the 2/389 Drill Sergeant unit in Webster, NY. I went to Drill Sergeant School last year, took off the beret, and put on the "brown-round".

They brought us Drill Sergeants down to NJ to be the instructors at this school b/c, as you can figure, our job is to teach Privates basic combat skills...and who better than us?

I am not very nice at times. To be honest, it all begins as an act. Your job is to spend the first 2 weeks of a basic training cycle yelling at your Soldiers...just to yell. We do work long hours though, we dont get to see a lot of our families, and after a while...your just so damn tired and miserable that it all come natural.

My biggest pet peeves with Privates, the items that really set me off:
- Poor uniform standards
- Marching like sh*t
and
- failing to pay attention to detail.

Just make sure you always look the part, do the right thing, listen, and communicate...you will go far. Being a Soldier isn't all that hard but it's how you conduct yourself, live up to the Army Standards, and lead others that makes the difference between sh*tbag and "high speed."
