The New York Yankees signed reliever Rafael Soriano this past offseason to a three-year, $35 million contract. Now he'll be earning a chunk of that while sitting on the disabled list.
The Newark Star-Ledger reports that the 31-year-old Soriano has an inflamed ligament in his throwing elbow and will have four to six weeks of rest and rehab ahead of him.
"He's obviously got a real issue," Yankees GM Brian Cashman said, The Star-Ledger reports.
"It's something we have to take care of, we have to be careful with it and if it's taken care of properly it'll be behind him, we hope, and you move forward."
Soriano had Tommy John surgery on the same elbow in 2004 and then had a separate operation on it in 2008 when he was with the Atlanta Braves. He has nine holds this season in 16 appearances.
