Novak didn't do shit last year.
He was instrumental in the Knicks being the offense they were. He may have only played 20 minutes a game, and averaged 7 pts, but without guys like Novak, JR, Copeland, etc who can get shots up quick the Knicks offense wouldn't have been as effective. NBA teams defend isolations and post ups by sending a help defender from the weakside of the play to overload the strong side, because making a pass to the weakside corner is a hard pass to make, and it will give enough time for the defenders to rotate and contest shots.
The Knicks also used a number of different pick and roll sets using JR Smith to free Steve Novak, they used a number of pick and roll sets using Steve Novak, and so on. Double screens, triple screens, double handoffs. The Knicks loved to run sets that involved guys rolling to the basket with Novak setting up in the strong side corner because that way the defense couldn't have their players crash into the lane to tag someone like Tyson Chandler because then they would be leaving Novak, or Copeland, free.
The entire Knicks offense is based around getting iso situations for Melo, Smith, etc and then being able to get the ball out to their shooters when those guys are doubled and pressured. Creating high quality shots from deep, coupled with Meloball and Felton-Chandler rolls, like I mentioned earlier. Those shots are going up, no matter if they are shooting 5% or 50%.
