Two years could also mean an increased role, which he may or may not be able to handle.

It also means that he gets to spend an off-season fully dedicating himself to becoming a better QB instead of learning a new offense. He's not going to have a larger role if Harbaugh doesn't think he can handle it.

Personally, I don't think they can have the same amount of success they had last year playing the same way offensively. They'll have to change it up a bit.

This. Gore is a year older. Jacobs is injury prone. Who's to say their running game will be so good again? I don't think Alex Smith is a potential 300 yarder most weeks and while their defense should still be pretty damn excellent, I think they'll have to score more points to win so many games again.
