The Twins would like to re-sign pitcher Carl Pavano and slugger Jim Thome, but they aren't going to overpay to do so.

Thome made $1.7 million last season while batting .283 with 25 homers and 59 RBI, clearing outperforming his contract.

It didn't appear as though Minnesota would have a chance to re-sign Pavano after he went 17-11, but he has expressed a desire to return.

The Star Tribune speculates that if the Twins spend a combined $15 million on Pavano and Thome that they may reach their spending limit.

The Twins shouldn't overpay for these two guys, Pavano generally does alright for them, not great and Thome is getting up there, but he still had a pretty good year, when he was playing. Twins definitely shouldn't break the bank on these two guys.

I agree, these guys are old and they cant tie themselves up too much with them. The twins are becoming a major power in the American League financially and these arent the same old twins that could be pushed around come playoff time. A team with a great front office and now a nice payroll, wow thats a scary thought.

Now that it looks like the Rangers are going to eventually land Beltre, I doubt they spend the money to grab Pavano too. The same goes for the Nationals and LaRoche. Although, I could see the Nats putting in a serious offer for Pavano. It wouldn't be totally stupid if the Twins over pay for Pavano, but only if some other team gets into a bidding war with the Twins.

As for Thome, Berkman set the bar for DH's this offseason by signing an $8M contact. But Damon, Manny, and Vlad are still out there looking to fill some teams role at DH. So the price should drop. So if Thome wants $5M+, the Twins could use one of the other three guys as leverage.

I wouldn't mind seeing Thome back in Cleveland, it's a shame we have Hafner making 10+ mill to waste a DH spot.

They don't need to overpay for both of them. Just overpay for Thome and let Pavano come to Detroit.
