Aside from a couple of details that still have to be worked out, the Toronto Maple Leafs are 'very close' to locking up captain*Dion*Phaneuf*to a seven-year, $49 million contract extension, according to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger.
Those details, according to TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie, are regarding Phaneuf's no-movement and no-trade clauses in the language of the new contract.
Phaneuf, 28, has been captain of the Maple Leafs for the last four seasons - shortly after being acquired in a trade with the Calgary Flames in 2010. He was set to become an unrestricted free agent next summer.
In 638 regular season games, the veteran blueliner has 109 goals and 354 points with 849 penalty minutes. He's played 260 games of those games*with Toronto, scoring 34 goals and 126 points.
