New York Giants owner John Mara confirmed Tuesday that Tom Coughlin would return as the team's coach next year.
But after the team went 7-9 last year and 6-10 this season, Mara made it clear that he expects to see improvement in 2015.
"Tom knows his legacy is on the line," Mara said in a long news conference Tuesday. "He doesn't want to have three losing seasons in a row."

He should have been fired years ago.

Tom is awesome. Heard his conference or whatever earlier and he was saying things like "What am I going to do? Roll over, crawl in the corner, stop caring? Well I'm not. I don't like being associated with Losing, it's embarassing. I'm not just going to GIVE UP."  Idk, that was paraphrasing. Wish I could find the full quote somewhere.

I think it's time to move on, but I might hear the same excuses from others

The only reason he wasn't fired is because of Ben McAdoo. If Tom goes, a new Head Coach is bringing in his own staff, meaning 3 OCs in 3 years. Ownership doesn't want that. Not that McAdoo is god or anything, they just don't want a new offense again. He gets a second year, maybe he gets a shot interviewing for the head coaching position.

This team needs 2 things: a few OL pieces, and to stay healthy. If they stay healthy, they compete for a WC, imo.

The injury bug has bitten this team so hard over the past few years. It's crazy.

He should have been on the hot seat last year

again, when they replaced Gilbride with McAdoo and kept Tom, they were basically keeping Tom for 2 more years. And last year they felt they owed it to Tom since, ya know, he had just recently won them a Super Bowl... So they weren't going to fire him for one bad losing season. But they fucked themselves at the same time.

This is becoming more of an excuse IMO...he won a super bowl, so last year he was OK to coach. Then now they got fucked again, so fire gilbride and keep tom coughlin.

I mean, I really hope something works next year because his coaching career with the giants might be tainted next year if they go below .500 again.

If he didn't luck into that 2nd Super Bowl he'd almost definitely be gone.

1. Super Bowl
2. 9-7 record.
3. Sucky year. Fire Gilbride. New Offensive Coordinator.
4. Sucky year. Keep Coughlin for one more year.

Although I agree with you, he needs a good year. Regardless, he'll never be "tainted". He won two Super Bowls. That's not an "excuse", that's an "accomplishment" not many coaches can say they have. In the end, he should have retired on top after 2011. I think I even said it then that I thought he should retire but people were like "no, that's crazy".
