As first reported by MLive.coms Chris Iott, the Tigers made a final long-term extension offer this weekend to the representatives of right-hander Max Scherzer and had it rejected. The two sides will wait until the offseason to pick the negotiations back up, and theres obviously now a very good chance that Scherzer will be hitting the open market.

We made him an offer that would have placed him among highest paid pitchers in baseball, Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski told the media on Sunday morning. They turned it down.

Scherzer is set to earn $15.53 million in 2014 his third and final season of salary arbitration.

The 29-year-old won American League Cy Young Award honors last season after going 21-3 with a 2.90 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, and 240 strikeouts in 214 1/3 innings (32 starts). His agent is Scott Boras.

The Tigers signed Justin Verlander to a seven-year, $180 million extension last March.

well hes as good as gone. id like to see him dealt to try and get the most we can.

Incredibly odd for Dombrowski to address Max's contract situation in a group setting. Don't think he's ever done anything like it before.

Heard he turned down 24 mill.
I love Max, but if that's the case I don't mind seeing him go.

Well, looks like his days are numbered in Detroit. I'm sure his greedy agent has a lot to do with it. Time to get the Cabrera deal done at least.

Dombrowski didn't seem real thrilled with him turning down the offer, felt the Tigers offered more than a fair enough deal and it wasn't good enough.

"We made a substantial offer," Dombrowski openly admitted Sunday. "And they didn't think it was substantial enough."

Dombrowski declined to address specific details of the offer the club extended, but told reporters Sunday that the Tigers made their "top offer, our final offer about a week before (deadline)."
"We thought we addressed a number of issues (number of years and total money)," he said. "It was a very substantial offer."

If he repeats his success from last year, market value dictates a larger contract than that.

Big if. Going to be hard to repeat last year.

I assumed it was because he wants to drive his value up.

But if the dude can reject a 24M contract then damn he better justify that with an amazing season.
