Sources: Brad Penny, Tigers agree

The Detroit Tigers and free-agent right-hander Brad Penny have agreed to a one-year deal worth $3 million, plus $3 million in incentives, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.

Penny is recovering from an upper-back injury that limited him to just nine starts in 2009.

He was 3-4 with a 3.23 ERA after signing a one-year, $7.5 million contract with the St. Louis Cardinals last offseason.

Quality signing. Big park, easier workload (5th starter), decent relief help. I think it's a good fit for both.

If he can pitch the way he was pre-injury, I love this signing. Quality 5th starter.

I am SO happy we signed him. He will be a quality 5th starter. I hate Galaragga and Oliver doesn't doeserve a major league spot yet.

I'm very happy about this. I've liked Penny. Especially in his pre-injury days. I'm hoping he does great, but even if he doesn't do much, he's still going to be a quality guy for our 5th. Tigers really needed to sign another pitcher and here he is.

Man he shouldve signed with the Red Sox, he would be amazing there. But still a decent signing by the Tigers, only pitched 55 innings last year though. So hopefully he's 100% this year.
