Rumors are flying that the replacement for Bob Bratkowski will have a very familiar name.

Gruden.

A league source tells us that Jay Gruden, currently the head coach of the Virginia Destroyers of the UFL, will become the next offensive coordinator of the Bengals. The source says the deal is done.

We’ve yet to obtain confirmation of that fact.

Gruden fits the player-acquisition profile that the Bengals have used in recent years. He was arrested for DUI in 2005.

He’s the younger brother of former Raiders and Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden.

Last night, Florio broke the story that Jay Gruden would be the next Bengals offensive coordinator. (To Chad Ochocinco’s disappointment, Bob Bratkowski was let go earlier this week.)

Florio mentioned we were awaiting confirmation of the story, and it’s been provided by Adam Schefter of ESPN this morning.

Yeah, I know who Jon is... I like Jon... I like what he brings to the game, on all levels... I hope Jay can bring a similar attitude... I just don't know anything about the guy, I never heard of him until now.

The Cincinnati Bengals have hired Jay Gruden, younger brother of former NFL coach Jon Gruden, as their offensive coordinator job.

NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora first reported the hiring was imminent on Thursday morning.

"We are excited to have Jay join us and give us a new direction offensively," Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said. "He has proven himself a consistent winner in a variety of positions and has earned tremendous respect in the coaching profession. He's going to provide the energy and attacking style that will best suit our offensive skill players and quarterback.

"This is something I wanted to get right, to take the time to make the best decision," Lewis said, "I appreciate the support I got from (Bengals president) Mike Brown in the process. The offense is where we need to show improvement, and when we do, we'll show that this team is ready to win the division again like we did just a year ago. Our defense is strong and still improving, and one thing we did in 2010 was to develop a number of very promising new players. Jay is a key addition to this process."

Gruden was on his brother's Tampa Bay Buccaneers staff from 2002-08 as an offensive assistant. He contributed to three divisional championship seasons, including the 2002 campaign that saw the Bucs defeat Oakland 48-21 for a victory in Super Bowl XXXVII.

He will guide a Bengals offense that finished 20th in the league in total offense (322 yards per game) and 22nd in points (20.1).

"I expect great things with the Bengals," Jay Gruden said. "I intend on bringing a great attitude and work ethic. We'll build off the strength this offense has developed and add a system to challenge everyone in the building. I thank Marvin Lewis and Mike Brown for this opportunity, and I look forward to working with a great offensive staff."

In 2010, Gruden was head coach and general manager of the Florida Tuskers of the United Football League. He led the Tuskers to the UFL championship game, where they lost to Las Vegas. In accepting his new position with the Bengals, he resigns as head coach of the UFL's new Virginia franchise. He had been hired to that job this past Jan. 12, after the Tuskers ceased operations.

In 2009, Gruden was offensive coordinator for the UFL Tuskers, helping them to an unbeaten regular season with a league-best 30.5 scoring average.

Gruden won four Arena Football League championships as a quarterback and two as a head coach. In 18 AFL seasons as a player and head coach, he never missed the playoffs.

I think Grudens the real deal, he actualy talked to Jon and consulted him from the booth when they were with the Buccaneers. 6 years working with a great coach like that should be more than enough to develop his skills. Plus, now we can get back to a true west coast offense. I think we were really lucky to get a coordinator of Grudens caliber after all the coaching moves that have been made in the league.

Here's some information for ya Vinny....

For those wondering if the Jay Gruden hiring would make Carson reconsider his position and want to be a Bengal in 2011, the odds still seem very slim. We are told that Carson is at the point in his thinking that no move the Bengals could make at this point will change his mind. The last 8 are just too much to overcome with token moves. That, combined with a desire to live on the west coast year round and be able to spend more time with his and Shaelyn's families, seem far more important than anything Mike or Marvin could offer him in Cincinnati. As you know, Mike has already stated that he will not trade him. And in recent talks, David Dunn said that Carson is prepared to retire if a trade doesn't happen. So they are at a standstill. At this point, I think Carson is ready and willing to retire if he can't be traded to one of the 3 west coast teams he requested.

Chad Ochocinco is now stating that he wants to be in Cincy and is happy to be here. Not that long ago, Chad sounded discontent and as if he might want out. I hear that they will listen to offers for Chad, but are not actively trying to trade him.

The hiring of Jay Gruden and his version of the WCO would seem to be the final nail in the chances of Cedric returning. Cedric is said to be asking for 3 yrs at 16-20m, which Mike will not pay. Ced isn't a great fit for a WCO. He excels in a power offense that showcases the run. IMO, I think Ced is all but gone and from what I've heard, there is definite interest in Michael Bush from Oakland.

Im not sure about Carson. Im hoping that hes bluffing, and trying to force Mike to trade him. I doubt the organization goes through a lot of trouble to get Ced, but hes probaly gonna drop his asking price, I cant see any team willing to pay a 28 year old running back that much after 1 good season. I would like to see Micheal Bush come here and split carries with Scott, but I think Oakland still wants him to complement Darren McFadden, and Bush might be a RFA, depending on the terms of the new CBA.

Hard to go wrong with a Gruden. I didn't know much about him before hand, but he's Jon's brother, and had success in the AFL, so i'm sold he'll be a great asset.
