A 22 year old defensive stud still on a rookie contract that's improving every year has no value? Mkayyyy. Smart would be the 1st/2nd guy off the bench for every single NBA team right now.
Lol I get you're a Celtics fan so you're going to be a bit of a homer, but you don't really believe that do you? I mean the Celtics are a first round out every year, and he isn't even their best bench player. I could go into 50 more reasons that statement is absolute lunacy.

He wouldn't be the 1st/2nd guy off the bench because that role is usually reserved for scoring players that can't play defense, like Jamal Crawford, Enes Kanter, and presumably Jahlil Okafor this year.

But Smart is a great backup player who pushes the ball well and provides excellent intensity that spreads to the whole team. You definitely undersell him a good bit, Nola, but he's not a 1st guy off the bench guy yet.

Didnt know that a defensive specialist has to shoot 45% from three lol. Look at tony allen, he cant shoot for shit but could contribute to a contender any day of the week

Who said he had to shooting 45% from three?

What has happened to Tony Allens value since the peak years of his career?  It has diminished pretty good.  There is only a certain value to these one way players who hurt your team offensively.  But there's a difference between Tony Allen and Marcus Smart.  Tony Allen understands how he impacts his team the most, he gets his weaknesses.  Marcus Smart doesn't do that, evidenced by the fact that he's been one of the most inefficent guards in the NBA the last two seasons.  Then you have Tony Allen, who is a 48% career shooter from the field.  Tony Allen is exactly the guy Marcus Smart should look at and try to be, atleast until he develops a better offensive game.

Im sure smart will realize he should play more like tony, but to say hes worth a rack of basketballs is kinda taking it too far. Hes young, he was the guy at oklahoma state so he still thinks he can do that at this level which he obviously cant and hopefully he will realize that. The nbas defense as a whole has gone down so much since the old days, to be this good defensively must be worth than a rack of basketballs. He just needs to stop shooting threes. Off the top of my head if we consider him a pg, hes prolly in the top 5 defensively

Saying he's worth a rack of balls is sarcasm, obviously.

My actual opinion, he's untradeable.  No team is going to offer anything of value for him, and Boston shouldn't and wouldn't give him up for pennies.

Regardless of how young he is, this league is incredibly deep in guards, probably deeper than we've ever seen, which drives the value of guys down by itself.  90% of the leagues guards are replaceable.  Couple the fact that Marcus has struggled on one end of the floor and actually saw his percentages drop from a bad rookie season, leaves his value pretty low, imo.

This might be one of the first legitimate points you've made

the one problem smart has, despite his shooting, is that he doesnt shoot intelligently. He will force shots for the sake of needing to score, and that hurts his game. The fact that basically half of his FGAs are 3pt shots is really not good at all, and defenses work against him because of that. If he can make better decisions and be more confident, Smart will be really good in the league

I'd like to see Smart drive / cut a lot more than what he has shown. If he can consistently get to the FT line that would be helpful. Again, he's 22 so there's still room to grow for him as a player.

If you recall I actually liked Smart coming out, I just don't think he's a good player at this point. He can still get there though.

To me it's almost comparable to that "how many times are you going to face an elite back to the basket big?  You really don't need to be paying that big body 10M a year" argument.  How many super elite offensive guards are there in the NBA?  6 or 7?  Maybe 8 but that may be being to compliment of someones skills, and honestly most of the guys are in the West.  So if you're facing an average, maybe slightly above average offensive guard or swing, what's really the value of a very good defender that hurts you offensively?

They SHOULD hang a banner if they manage to fleece a team and package him for a star haha
