Sorry about the 3rd consecutive Mike Singletary thread...but it will be the last in the NFC West thread.

Niners fire Singletary
When 49ers owner Jed York declined on Sunday to commit that coach Mike Singletary would be coaching the team next week, the message was clear: Singletary wouldn’t be coaching the team next year.

As it turns out, he won’t be coaching the team next week. David White of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that Singletary has been fired.

He got the job on an interim basis in 2008, after Mike Nolan was fired. Rumors of a firing had swirled for weeks, but the 49ers opted to stay put, presumably because the 49ers remained alive for the NFC West crown despite being 5-9.

After the 49ers lost to the Rams on Sunday, finally putting them out of their and everyone else’s misery, the Niners could make their move.

UPDATE: The Niners have announced the move. And if you had Jim Tomsula in the office pool as the likely interim head coach, congratulations.

guy never had a chance. Tough to work with a little diva like Michael Crabtree and having Alex and Troy Smith as your QBs, as well as your starting RB's season ending early.
That's his job GMF...I don't care what the situation. The 49ers haven't just underachieved under his watch, they've totally fucking sucked. He's mismanaged his quarterbacks, couldn't make up his mind who to start, had discipline problems, and now he's arguing with players on sidelines.

People need to stop being so sympathetic for this guy. How come nobody gave this much of a shit when Mike Nolan was fired?

Well for what Singletary did have to work with...he fucked up. Of any quarterback under center for the Niners, within the last couple season, Singletary dismissed the most productive...Shaun Hill. At the same time, Singletary, who is no offensive guru, fails to retain Mike Martz on his staff.

Boo hoo, Mike Singletary.

Shaun Hill is the more conservative of the 2 quarterbacks, hence the lower interception numbers. To say that he didn't do shit is a reflection on the entire team. Alex Smith came in and started gun-slinging, coincidentally at the same time Vernon Davis grew the fuck up, but how much better did he make the team?

Alex Smith is garbage, Shaun Hill gives any team a much better chance to win, as does Mike Martz as your OC. Again, no sympathy for Mike.

Man, Shaun Hill was a 3rd stringer until he got a chance to show what he could do a few years ago. He wasn't getting it done last year and Smith came in and gave the team a better chance to win. He's a spread offense QB and runs it so well. You can't say its just a coincidence Vernon grew up, because we all know he's a great TE and he was actually able to get the ball last year.

Call Smith what you want, doesn't matter he'll never get past his bust status

You seem to be defending Singletary and I don't get why. Saying, "he had nothing to work with", is not only inaccurate but no excuse.

I'd defend any coach in SF until they actually put together a roster thats not gonna disappoint.

San Francisco's roster was better than that of any other team in the NFC West. I might even argue that their roster was just as good as Arizona's last year. They failed to play up their potential under Singletary's watch....hence why he's gone.

It would be different if Singeltary was coaching Buffalo or Carolina.

Realest shit ever

The team didn't even play like they wanted to win at times. You've got dudes playing like they don't know what the fuck to do out there. But it's ok, I expect change in 2011...I hope at least

I liked his attitude as a coach. Sucks to see him go. 4th coach fired this year. I don't see him being the last one in the least.

Singletary doesn't exactly get the credit he deserves. While he did have alot of Talent in San Fran, he never really had a real QB. He also turned Vernon Davis' life around and made him into the superstar he is now. Frank Gore was always hurt. Never had a real chance to build the team his way if you ask me, just a bad situation for a good coach.

Nope, Jack Del Rio will be the next to go.
With Garrard/MJD out sunday, we'll then lose our 3rd straight game to end the year. Owner Wayne Weaver said at the start of this year "playoffs or bust" for him. Goodbye Jack.
