Cowboys targeting Week Sixteen for Romo

The Dallas Cowboys will finish the season 8-8 in a best-case scenario. A playoff berth is unrealistic, but owner Jerry Jones remains hopeful that quarterback Tony Romo will be able to play again this season.

Many have questioned the Cowboys’ plan to reinsert Romo in what is shaping up as a lost season.

But Jones’ primary goal is to finis strong, and the Cowboys have kept Romo on the active roster rather than injured reserve because a healthy Romo gives the team its best chance to win late-season games.

Asked about the possibility of Romo playing in Week Sixteen against the Cardinals, Jones replied “In my opinion, he will be.”

“I want to do anything we can to win those games,” explained the Cowboys’ owner to the Associated Press. “(The decision) will be based on what gives us the best chance to win. And when (Romo) is ready to go, he’s going to be ready. I shouldn’t be concerned about additional injury to his shoulder.”

Jones also confirmed that Romo would return as a starter, not Kitna’s backup. Romo fractured his collarbone in Week Seven. Dallas is 3-1 in Kitna’s last four starts, and would almost certainly be 4-0 if not for this play.

I thought this was insane at first but the more I think about it, why not? If Romo is your franchise quarterback, then get him back onto the field and try to reestablish as much chemistry as possible before the season ends. Dallas will have to make a few personnel decisions come season's end and some of those decisions can (obviously) be related to who is/plays best around that franchise QB. And after no giving a damn for the first however many games of the season, its nice Dallas finally cares enough to do whatever it takes to put on a show for fans each Sunday.

I think it's good in the sense of getting him reps at the end of the year, just as long as he doesn't further injure his shoulder.

I don't think it makes any sense to play him for 1 or 2 meaningless games to possibly cause further injury that could lead into next year. Just let him heal completely, to have a healthy Romo next year. What are you going to get out of two games? Not much. He doesn't need any reps.

Only reason they are bringing him back is basically to build chemistry. Same thing with Marion Barber missing some games and back to practicing this week. He wants to build the chemistry and show the coach what he's about. Playing for his job, to an extent. Tony Romo, doesn't have the same concern, but when he was playing this year, Phillips was the coach. Why wouldn't you want to have your franchise QB to build some chemistry with the new coach? Obviously, the biggest risk/worry would be re-injuring himself, especially since they have nothing but games to play for this year.

You don't even know that's going to be the coach for next year.

You are assuming that Jason Garrett will be the coach next year.

If the Cowboy's have made up their mind that they are keeping him as their coach than it would make sense for Romo to come back.

But I don't think that decision has been made yet...

I know that. Nobody knows who is going to be the coach and some of the players next year, but if he is still going to be the coach next year, it helps to get some chemistry now then have to wait until next year. Although, I don't see them not keeping him as coach. They actually have one now. Instead of Wade "I want to be your buddy" Phillips. It's Jason "Let's go out and actually show we care" Garrett.

Who knows with Jerry Jones, never know what that guy is going to do. Dallas will definitely have to finish out strong IMO.
