Colorado Rockies third baseman Ian Stewart will likely start the season on the disabled list, according to MLB.com. Stewart has barely played in the Cactus League this year and unfortunately sprained his right knee while doing so.
The injury came when Stewart was trying to catch a foul pop-up and he collided with left fielder Carlos Gonzalez.
"He's only played three innings and it's the 11th of March, so am I a little concerned?" manager Jim Tracy said, according to the site. "I'll tell you this: I do not want to feel compelled to think we have taken anybody and tried to rush him to the finish line to try to throw him out there. You're asking for trouble, and I had enough of that last year with 833 days worth [of combined disabled list days]."
The site notes that Ty Wigginton could make the bulk of the starts until Stewart returns.

Not really a big loss, Wiggington isn't much worse than Stewart

Yeah both very similar players. Problem is its a little tough to assess Stewart seeing as he's never played over 150 games in a season. Only difference between the two from last season is Wigginton had a few more HRs and more RBIs but in reality he had a healthy, full season. Stewarts SLG and OPS were still better.

And just cuz their similar players doesn't necessarily mean it's ok, Wigginton is a fill-in at the position. You want to have Ty on the bench because he's a utility guy. He can play multiple position. Over the last 2 years hes played 1B, 3B, & 2B 30+ games, had a few games as a DH, and played a few games here and there as SS or corner OF. Not a lot at those but its nice to have a guy who can play those position fairly well to give somebody a day off.

Yeah, I know how valuable those guys can be. Jerry Hairston Jr. was huge for us in 2009. He can play everywhere but pitcher, he was our bullpen catcher sometimes too lol
