The Houston Rockets have given Royce White their blessing to travel to games via bus when the schedule allows for it.

“We’ll go forward in a good faith deal between me and Rockets, and I’m totally comfortable with that,” said White, who has been absent from camp. “We can find a way to get it into writing at some point. We do have a letter between us. It’s an agreement, not in contract form, but those are technicalities.

“What the Rockets are doing is astronomically appreciated by me and should be by the mental health community.”

White has battled Generalized Anxiety Disorder, which is enhanced by his fear of flying.

White said he will supply the bus he will use for much of the season’s travel, calling overnight trips of up to nine hours “no problem at all.”

By leaving immediately after practices and games, White said he can keep his normal sleeping habits which is part of the treatment for his disorder and still arrive in most cities before the next day’s practice or shootaround.
that is going to be such a mess. good luck to him and the team though. i really wish the best.

What happens when he's the surprise of the rookie class (not to anybody here, yeah, but to most people they'll have no idea who he was) and he ends up missing a game due to weather conditions or a mechanical breakdown? I want this team to do whatever it takes to allow Royce to cope with his anxiety disorder, because he is by and far our best draft pick, but I am slightly worried about this setup.

Just knock him out before flights and carry him on and off the plane.

i honestly think bipolar disorder is a crock of shit. so many people use it to not work, use it as a reason to why they went crazy and killed people. everyone has mood swings. i know this bothers people more than others and in his case(others should think like this too), meds cant work because he'll be stoned on the court.

It's definitely not that simple...

If it were as simple as just "sucking it up" do you honestly think he'd be willing to ride a bus across the country 6 months a year? This isn't just a fear of flying, he has a clinically diagnosed anxiety disorder. I've been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder myself. Social anxiety to be specific, so I have a different perspective on this than most of you. Something as simple as talking on the phone scares the shit out of me. Hell, holidays or any other type of family gathering that I decide to go to terrifies me in most cases. I'm not trying to compare my situation to his, but it shows that these panic attacks and irrational fears that White has can be triggered by several different things. Flying happens to be one of them.

He may be able take some anxiety medication before or during his flights to help calm him down and mellow him out a bit, but that doesn't work for everyone. They certainly didn't do a lot for me. This isn't a "man up" situation. This is real.

I bet he'll have a nice big bed in the bus. Just sleep the whole way. That'd be nice.

I don't see why they don't just put him on Dr. Phil or whatever those shows are that help people with problems like this.

Did he really just say something about Dr. Phil, TV shows, and helping people?
