With some really big names retiring this year, what do you think the chances the players have of making it into Cooperstown?
David Ortiz?
A'Rod?
David Ross?
Prince Fielder?
Others?

Here's my take -- Papi, even with the PED suspicion, I think he's in.
A'Rod -- should have been a lock, but all of the PEDs keep him out forever.
Ross -- Hall of OK.
Prince -- Not enough longevity.  Peak was great, but not long enough.

How about we rename this thread to current players who if they retired today, would be in the hall of fame. Seems like only Ortiz has a shot here since it doesn't appear people are on the A-rod hype train.

Papi - None because of PEDs
Arod - None because of PEDs
Ross - Hall of Crappy - catman you misspelled Crappy
Prince - Hall of Good, just not enough peak

Others that I think are Hall of Fame today if they were to retire at the end of the season
Trout
Pujols
Kershaw
Cabrera

If Ortiz gets in, does that open the door for other PED guys?

Ortiz was never convicted though. He was name dropped in one report and that's it. He's passed every drug test the league has mandated to him

I personally think that over 70% of MLB players from 2000-present took steroids, including Ortiz, but there isn't actual evidence to say he did

I forgot Tex.  His peak was good, but not long enough.  Hall of very good.
As to Papi and the PEDs, I think he has done enough to rehabilitate his name and image to get in.  Not playing a defensive position regularly at any time in his career hurts him also, but he is arguably the best DH in the history of the game.

I'd be happy to get Ortiz in, but if I recall, Sosa was never convicted and he's not getting in.

Personally, I'd have Palmeiro, McGwire, Clemens, Ramirez, Belle, Sosa all in the Hall of Fame.  Shoeless Joe too.

No to Prince. Ross is a great presence for the Cubs, maybe down the line as a manager, but no where close as a player. A-Rod no due to roids.

The only one retiring this year I'd say yes to is Big Papi
