Alex Anthopolous continues to leave no stone unturned as he looks for ways to improve the Blue Jays roster.
According to a story in the New York Times, Anthopolous inquired about New York Mets shortstop Jose Reyes during the off-season and could target him when he becomes a free agent after the season.
The report claimed that no trade proposals were made but unnamed sources said Anthopolous made "exploratory contact" with the Mets during spring training. The Jays are said to be monitoring his progress as the Mets continue to deal with ownership issues.
Reyes, 28, is a two-time all-star and would fit Anthopolous' mandate to improve the speed and upper-echelon talent on the Blue Jays roster. The flashy shortstop will be one of the most coveted free agents after the 2011 season and could command a Carl Crawford-type contract (7 years, $142 million).
The Jays currently have Yunel Escobar at shortstop but if they acquired Reyes, the team could move Escobar over to second base to create one of the top middle infields in the American League. Manager John Farrell has struggled to find a consistent leadoff hitter all season, and Reyes would certainly fit the bill.
According to the report, the St. Louis Cardinals, Boston Red Sox and Washington Nationals all could be interested in signing Reyes as a free agent.
